Lemonade apple is damn good. Similar to the Opal in appearance and texture/consistency (fairly large and yellow, but without the brown patch around the stem), though the skin doesn't induce much (if any) drymouth.
This one has a surprising amount of crunch and juice despite its large soft-ish appearance. And the flavor has a bright lemony zip that doesn't taste quite as severe as the Pink Lady, but it's balanced with an appealing amount of sweetness, very much living up the it's name. Typically tart apples are too tart or not tart enough for my tastes, but this one is balanced more than maybe any other apple I've had. Best new-ish cultivar I've had in a while.
I got some cosmic crisps yesterday. They're really good! Very very crisp and crunchy and juicy and sweet. They taste kind of like red grapes. The one negative is that the skin is pretty thick on them.
I haven't been getting many apples lately. The latest group is honeycrisps which are a real basic one as you probably know (watery-mild-tart), and like gala-adjacent in quality. But one benefit of these is that when you get a really great tasting one it's a total surprise. Galas tend to be a bit more consistent in quality than honeycrisps and fujis
If you’ve left an apple sitting in your crisper for long enough, the bottom will begin to wrinkle and shrivel up a bit. I just tried eating a pink lady apple that had about 30% wrinkle coverage on one side and can confirm that despite this, it retained its flavor and crispness somehow
got fancy apples again for the first time in a really long time. I had been getting net bags of pink ladys and honeycrisps, but finally decided to go back and splurge on a few of the more expensive ones. I got envys, raves, and pink ladys. There was an apple there I had never seen before. I think they were called modi? Might have to try that one sometime. They had cosmic crisps there too, which I remember being okay, but maybe too expensive for what you get.
I always pick out firm apples but some of the envys fooled me because the first one I ate was way mealy. Surprisingly, it wasn't bad! Envys have such a good flavor and this one was juicy enough to where the mealiness didn't make me want to throw the thing away immediately.
The pink ladys were almost wiped out at the store and every single one I picked up felt perfect and they were a good price.
I think my favorite go-tos are pink ladys, envys, opals, and galas. I don't really like the inconsistency of flavor with honeycrisps. I judged fujis quickly when the crispness was inconsistent but should probably give them another chance. Galas never seem to disappoint. The flavor is mild but the price reflects that, and the juicyness and crispness and firmness of them is pretty consistent, so there's not much chance you'll get let down.
it's odd how descriptions I've read about the flavors of apples don't match my experience. I read something that said sugarbee apples have a sort of modest sweet flavor, but every one of those I had was super sweet with a honey flavor.
Alright Lucy Glo apples. I've got my hands on one now and it's got a really bright flavor almost like eating a citrus or tart berry, but is also very sweet so it's fairly balanced. Almost like a watery pink lemonade. It's a little more sweet than the pink lady and a lot juicier. The skin seems a little thick and I'm getting a little of that chalky drymouth, but not too much.
can I have a bite
