What shape are you?

You may have heard the terms "apple-shaped" or pear-shaped" before. What does that mean?

"Apple-shaped" means you carry excess fat around your abdomen area while "pear-shaped" means you carry most of your weight around your hips with a narrow waist. 

Research has shown that those who carry more body fat around their abdomen (apple-shaped) are at a greater risk for conditions, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. Why is this the case? The bad guy is the visceral fat, or the fat that surrounds the body's internal organs, which rest mainly in the abdominal area. 

It is recommended that women maintain a waistline <35 inches and that men maintain a waistline <40 inches. This may even be a more important indicator than overall weight for some health conditions. 

So what can you do if you don't meet these recommendations? Start making healthy lifestyle changes! You can do this on your own, with a friend, or with the help of a Registered Dietitian (RD).
