Hey, so I’m wanting to go to school to become a doctor. I was reading up about a few things and one page said that I could go 2 ways with my degree? A bachelor of science and a Bachelor of Arts. Is that true? Do you know anything about that?

You can get any degree you would like prior to going to medical school as long as you take the required pre-medical classes. See this post:

A Bachelor of Science encompasses most of these courses but you are not required to get one.

Hello, I am in High School and am in a program called Health Academy where we take classes like medical terminology and sports medicine to prepare us for careers in the medical field. I want to become an ER Surgeon but I don't know what I should be majoring in when I get to college. Can you give an idea of what path I should take after I get out of high school ( plan on going to UCSD) Also, Is there anything I can do to prepare now?

I’m not sure what you mean by ER surgeon. If you are in the United States, such a position does not exist. You may mean trauma surgeon. You can be any major you want but check out this post for more information:

wanted to go to med school after I graduate but I just found out my deferred adjudication can't get expunged, just disclosed, either way they'd see.. didn't think of it as a problem & even if i could competition is high for admittance? What do you think?

You can’t give up before you have even started. If it is truly your dream and your passion to become a doctor you should go for it.

Be prepared for interviewers to ask you about it on your interviews. Why you did what you did (I was young and stupid, I was trying to steal bread to feed my family) and also what you learned from what you did and how it is going to make you a better doctor.  Hope this helps.

Hello, I’m a senior and I’m thinking about going into med but my previous grades weren’t that high. And will I be able to make it if I got really good grades this year? And will I be able to make it in general ? A lot of people made me doubt myself that I won’t be able to make it and then drop out of med (if I got in) so I’m having second thought about going into med.

The best thing you can do is work hard and get the best grades you possibly can and apply from there. If you are good enough to get into medical school, you are good enough to get through medical school.

Hi! I'm 16 and am thinking about becoming a doctor. I was wondering if you had any suggestions for summer jobs/volunteer work. I was thinking about being a lifeguard because (I think) you learn first aid but I can't swim well enough lol. Also am I too young to start shadowing? I feel like I am but I would really like to see if I think this profession is for me as early as possible. (sorry if this is a repeat question, but the last time I asked I'm not sure if I actually sent it to you oopsies)

I think any job during the summer in high school is beneficial. It can show hard work, dedication and even leadership if you get promoted. It does not need to be medically related, there is plenty of time for medical/science related jobs during college. Lifeguard is a fantastic idea. Work on your swim skills first.

As for shadowing, there is not wrong time to start shadowing. Age shouldn’t be a factor but it is up to the comfortability of the doctor you are working with. It doesn’t hurt to ask around. Hope this helps.

Hi my name is Bryana and I'm starting my first year of college in a couple weeks. The dream is to be a surgeon but even after all the research I could do I still am confused about the whole process. For instance I don't know what to major in; general bio, microbio, etc. I also don't know what the difference between a ba and a bs is and which is better for going to med school. I appreciate any help I can get. I'm playing this whole thing by ear and have no clue what I'm doing.

As far as ba v bs, I would apply the same answer and take the classes needed for medical school. Usually a BS should cover most of the classes but you can get a BA and do the same. The difference between BS and BA is the class requirements. Hope this helps.

Wahhh I absolutely love your posts they are so encouraging!!!! So I had the idea of combining my highschool volunteering hours with something relating to medicine. Do you have any tips of where to volunteer as a future med student?
