Motherfucker, that is so unfair, its, oh, wait, it just took his body a moment to catch up with his head. I got up into a crouch to fire again, never hurts to make sure they’re really dead, when I heard a stick snap behind me. It turned out it was a new servitor, and this one was armed with an assault rifle. When he lifted the rifle, I ran like crazy into the building, focusing the majority of my shield on my six. Let me take a moment to talk about my shield. I’m super proud of this thing. When I first started training with my teacher, my shield was like some old timey shield, rigid and brittle, could only take a few shots before shattering. This one is based off of aerogel, which among its many uses, NASA uses it to collect space dust. It’s excellent at absorbing and dispersing energy of projectiles, hence its use by NASA. That also makes it pretty good at slowing down bullets. So darn pleased with it. But, while it’s good at slowing bullets from smaller hand guns, it’d never been tested on anything fired from larger caliber weapons. Puffs of energy rattled behind me, then two hit my back, stopped by my body armor. It wasn’t enough to come close to penetrating the armor, but it was more than enough to cause me to trip over the debris that scattered the area. Before I could even register the fall, a pair of hands grabbed me by the neck and threw me into the wall of the mill. Metal groaned and suddenly I felt like nauseous every time I took a deep breath, the sensation was disorienting.
With great effort, I sat up against the wall, looking out towards my attacker. He came screaming towards me. Normally I think that sort of thing is overly dramatic, but it had a pretty good effect this time. With all the concentration and energy I could muster, I began to squeeze the earth around an old metal I-beam that’d fallen from somewhere and now lay partially sunken in the ground. It didn’t move. I shifted the effort a bit, focusing on the end of it, trying to squeeze and push, but my worry was turning into a frantic fear, so I put in more energy. Then, with out warning, it shot out of the ground, right through the midsection of my attacker. He looked as surprised as I felt in the dramatic change in the situation.
Much effort was expended in standing up, so that’s my defense for why it took me so long to see the boxes neatly stacked around all of the main supports of the mill. Huh, well, here was where watching lots of bad Saturday tv paid off, one look and it was obvious. I yelled for my teacher, “Carlos, it’s a trap, there are explosives!” It was at this point I located the 4th servitor. The thing was badly injured, but that didn’t stop him from messing with something near the explosives, probably the detonator. I had nothing more magically, so I shot him, and he demonstrated the, by now, unsurprising reaction of not really seeming to care. Old clip out, new clip in, I shot him some more. Those fuckers are way too durable for my tastes.
“Lake, get out now!” Disengaging from him own fight, he made a run for the door. I was right behind him, then in front of him. Stopping, I turned around to see he’d fallen, clutching his leg. Giving my brain a pep talk, I turned, running back hard to get to him, to help him up to get clear. The best we moved at was a gimpy scurry, which got us all of 3 meters further than we had been when the building exploded. What’s weird to me, and I should ask how he did it, but even before I hear or felt the explosion, Carlos grabbed me, then just collapsed on top of me. His shield shimmered and rippled with energy of the explosion, the force causing one type of distortion, the heat another. It’s pretty, but hard to really appreciate in that sort of moment It hurt to have his weight on my chest, but at that point it was just one more thing to go with the cold and tired, I didn’t really care.
“Good, can they all be dead now?” It was meant to be funny, but my body and soul ached for it to be true. Gingerly, Carlos rolled off of me, something which my body was so thankful for. “We need to check it out. My leg’s a bit torn up, can you do a check of the perimeter and debris?” A bit torn up? If and when he every copped to being hurt, it was done with a blithe comment about his general awesomeness, so it must have been bad. “Okay,” I think was all I managed, trying to compartmentalize my own pain.
After 10 minutes of moving through what remained of the old mill, it was clear there was nothing left alive. There was also no documents, no computers, nothing that might have told us what they were doing out here, who might have passed through. The pain driven desire to cry was now pushed along by a sense of frustration.
“Anything?”
I rounded what had been the corner of the building. “No, nothing, and half with building ended up in the river.” Looking back over my shoulder at the water, I heard the song of a bird, then a quiet hum of some insects. In a strange way, that was heartening to see nature rebound so quickly, to know that the poison had been the servitors, not the land. At least nature could resume a sense of normalcy, that was a positive after all the pain and destruction.
