With the Empire State Building below, PanAm's Clipper, then the world's largest and fastest commercial airliner, takes a preview flight over Manhattan, April 9, 1949. It was necessary for the 75-passenger double-decked Clipper to fly above 1,500 feet to clear the top of the building. The aircraft itself was 110' 4" long, and if its 71-ton bulk could have been stood on its tail in the street, the nose would have reached above the 10th floor of the 102-story skyscraper. The Clipper was the civil version of the U.S. Air Force's B-50 bomber. It had a cruising speed of 340 miles an hour at 25,000 feet.
