April Pools’ Day: Pool & Water Safety
With spring springing and summer just around the corner, many people are heading to the water. While the water can provide great therapy, exercise, fun, and a welcome respite from the heat, it’s important to keep water and pool safety in mind.
According to the American Red Cross, “drowning is the leading cause of death in nearly every country.” A person can drown in just 1 inch of water. Also, a swimming pool is 14 times more likely than a motor vehicle to be involved in the death of a child under the age 4. Here are a few tips to keep you and your family safe!
POOL SAFETY IS NO JOKE
Never leave your child unattended around water. We know it sounds strict, but there is no room for compromise on this one. Babies can drown in as little as one inch of water.
Put the cell phone away, forget about all the other things you have to do, and give young children 100 percent of your attention when they are near or around water.
Empty all tubs, buckets, containers, and wading pools immediately after use. Store them upside down and out of children’s reach.
Parents have a million things to do, but learning CPR should be on the top of the list. It will give you tremendous peace of mind – and the more peace of mind you have as a parent, the better. It can improve the chances of survival and reduce risk of brain damage. Learn how here.
If the house serves as the fourth side of a fence surrounding a pool, install an alarm on the exit door to the yard and the pool. For additional protection, install window guards on windows facing the pool. Drowning victims have also used pet doors to gain access to pools. Keep all of your barriers and alarms in good repair with fresh batteries.
Never swim alone. Even good swimmers need buddies!
Children should wear life jackets at all times when on boats or near bodies of water.
Blow-up water wings, toys, rafts and air mattresses should not be used as life jackets or personal flotation devices. Adults should wear life jackets for their own protection, and to set a good example.
Always keep basic lifesaving equipment by the pool and know how to use it. A reaching pole, rope and flotation devices, such as ring buoys, rescue tubes and life jackets, are recommended. A well-stocked first aid kit should also be available. Store the safety gear in a consistent, easily accessed location. A “safety post” may be used.
Have a professional pool service technician inspect your home and pool for proper safety precautions, especially if you have young children.
Follow these safety tips and pass them on to ensure your family and friends are accident-free this summer!
