She was the result of a summer fling, and never knew her father (wc!). When she was a baby, her mother found religion and a husband. Saffron grew up on her step-father’s ranch in West Texas along with her half-siblings (also a wc).
Saffron never belonged there. Part of it was that she never really felt like a member of her family, but rather an unfortunate souvenir her mother had acquired from a bad vacation.
And, small town life never suited her. Saffron, charismatic and daring from the beginning, felt like a big fish stuck in a tiny, muddy pond. Seeing her choices in her hometown as either supplication or suffocation, she decided to take her chances. Her mother warned that if she left, she would never be welcome back. That was just fine with Saffron.
She found magic by accident. She had worked all kinds of odd jobs, and it just so happened that one of them was as a cashier at a magic shop. Out of boredom, she taught herself cardistry, and then other tricks as well. The shop’s old owner, the descendant of a line of vaudeville magicians, was impressed and took her under his wing.
A few years later, a magician acquaintance needed an assistant in a hurry and she stepped in. Saffron became his regular assistant, performing in his cruise ship and stage shows. She was good at it (a past job as a stripper was actually great prep for being a box jumper) and liked knowing the inner workings.
Saffron also knew she could do it better.
After eventually moving to Los Angeles, Saffron began working on getting her own show off the ground. She began by performing close-up magic in bars and booking platform shows in clubs, all while perfecting bigger and better tricks.
Over the last few years, her magic has made her famous. One of her biggest specialities is escapology, and she has been called the new Houdini.
Saffron is fearless and inventive, which really drives her work. She finds doing magic absolutely exhilarating, and is always testing new ideas.
She’s also charismatic - controlling the audience is essential to magic, and she knows how to make sure eyes are exactly where she wants them ad nowhere else.
Still, she’s pretty closed off. Most people, even those who’ve known her a while would admit to not actual knowing much about her. She’s especially tight lipped about her past, preferring to let people guess what her backstory might be. (And needless to say, Saffron doesn’t love showing emotional vulnerability.)

Cosima’s early childhood was idyllic. She and her four siblings were born in Berkeley to Edith Wang and James Lo, archaeologists who travelled frequently. Their parents, were open-minded, curious people who wanted their children to be the same way and encouraged them to pursue whatever they were interested in.
Edie and James were also big film fans, and it was thanks to them that Cosima got the bug. After she was given a Super 8 camera for her birthday one year, she knew she could never be anything else.
When she thirteen, her parents and twin sister Delphine died in a car accident in Greece, which Cosima narrowly survived.
A part of her might as well have died with her parents and twin, and things only got worse once she and her siblings moved in with their grandparents, with whom she had a fraught relationship. Cosima’s teenage years were honestly pretty hellish, and she doesn’t remember them fondly. (Although they did influence the themes that occur in a lot of her work.)
Cosima started out with a couple of award winning short films, and her first feature was a self-financed micro-budget film (like Shane Carruth’s Primer or to a lesser degree Nolan’s Following) that unexpectedly won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.
Her second and third films were also small (in the 1-10 mil range) budget arthouse indies. Both were noted for being visually striking and daring. Critics loved them, and they established Cosima as an important new director. But they were also hardly tentpoles.
Her fourth film, while having a lot in common with her others, actually gained mainstream success and made a lot of money at the box office (it was probably a horror film). It was nominated for several oscars: picture, director, original screenplay, actress, cinematography, editing, score, sound mixing, and production design, and won two or three of them.
Cosima is also the creator of a popular high concept sci-fi drama on HBO, and has produced several films outside of her own. (Her fifth feature, an ensemble psychological drama about a cult is currently in post-production and will premiere at the Venice Film Festival).
As you might have already guessed, she’s a complete workaholic, even by the standards of filmmakers. Cosima hates boredom almost as much as she just really loves her job (as stressful and frustrating as it can be).
She’s also quite the perfectionist. She’s never really satisfied with herself (although as she’s gotten older it no longer manifests as self-hatred) and always wants even the tiniest details to be exactly right. Her distinctive style/aesthetic and attention to detail are a hallmark of her work.
Cosima is blunt and doesn’t suffer fools. She just doesn’t have the time. It can come off as intimidating, although she doesn’t really mean to be and is a big softie when you get to know her. She’d do absolutely anything for her friends and family.

now the jump from architect to comic book writer is a little extreme but after years and years of school, independent research, an internship, the are exam and finally, some years of working for smaller architectural firms ——— she felt burnt out. she still loves and appreciates architecture but wanted to explore art more. the same way she was able to picture her design projects was the way she approached writing comics. arcs and all, from end to beginning is the way samara likes to work. luckily for her, after attending about 7 talent workshops she was finally approached.
