It had been a few days and Mal wanted the world to just be silent. He buried his brother today, something he never thought he’d actually do. It was a stark contrast to the gathering they just had to celebrate Monty’s 29th birthday, but he stood there, taking it all in. Saying the eulogy when Lany couldn’t. Holding on to his mother with one arm and Lany with the other as people talked about his brother. He hated everything about today, like watching Lu’s lone figure sitting beside the grave, staying behind while everybody else retreated to his childhood home to eat. Not a word heard from her since that night. Like this damn suit he never wanted to wear again, because it meant he’d be at a funeral. The tie was the first thing he took off as soon as he arrived home. Like feeling choked up as soon as Kyle gave him a hug that he pulled away from quickly because if he hadn’t, he’d be a crying mess in his brother’s arms. Like how concerned Ari looked and how tightly he held onto her hand, grateful for her presence. Like the Oh family letting him know they were around for whatever his family needed.
His family. First, it was his dad. In a way, his mom. Now, it was Monty. As his eyes rested on his trophy case in his home, custom made, with all the basketball trophies and awards he’d had over the years, all he could feel was anger. He felt like he had lost so much and he’s still losing so much. It wasn’t fucking fair. The basketball in his hand that he had been planning on taking out back to shoot some hoops with to let off some steam was what he used instead to throw at the trophy case and with all that anger in him, he watched as everything just... shattered. Felt fitting because it felt like that was what his life was like right now too. Mal was breathing heavily as he watched the glass break and all the trophies crash down to the floor, only belatedly seeing someone at the door. “Leave it!” He barked out before realizing who it was. “Sorry. Sorry, I--” Mal started to stammer, inhaling shakily as he shook his head at Ari. “Just... just leave it. I’ll... clean it up.”

“Thanks for agreeing to come with me,” Mal said as he continued driving, shooting her a quick, grateful smile before returning his attention to the road, though his free hand rested on her knee. “I know it’s still more than two weeks away but I need to figure out what to get Monty for his birthday. I’m leaving the sappy shit to his girlfriend, but I still want to get him something good, you know?. Got any suggestions for me?” He asked, though buying a present today wasn’t really his priority. Mal just wanted an excuse to hang out with Aranya again.

Mal stood outside her door, took a deep breath before he knocked. All he wanted was to go back to being that happy-go-lucky guy he was used to being but everything since the night of the snowstorm had felt so... heavy. The last thing he wanted was to put that on her, but the man was selfish. Always had been, and selfishly, he was really glad to see her. “Hey, you,” Mal said, showing her a smile before he one-arm hugged her, pressing a kiss on the top of her head, before holding up the bag he had in his other hand and shaking it slightly. “Ordered before I got your text so I thought we could share. You in the mood for shrimp balls and tempura?”

“Fuck,” Mal muttered when the news started talking about something else. He was on his phone in seconds, before he turned towards Ari. “You feeling okay?” He asked gently as he leaned down to put his boxers back on.
