how can you of all people not look at a pretty blue gemstone and not need to know what mineral it is?

listen I would have loved to buy a nice piece of jewelry from either of the two stalls that were selling actual labelled stones and minerals and fordite.  The chrysocolla!  the malachite!  the seraphinite it was so pretty ughhhhh~ BUT they neither of them had anything actually nice under $30, or anything at all under $16, whereas my new sterling-silver-and-mumble earrings were only $8.

I’m also (perhaps undeservedly) kind of cynical about anything that’s advertised as a birthstone without further specifics being anything other than “glass in the right sort of color,” so I didn’t particularly want to ask.

but google says december’s birthstone is blue topaz, tanzanite, or turquoise, so of those I’d guess they’re blue topaz.

...they’re kind of too small for it to make a real difference, eh.  But I like them.

In the unlikely event this happens, I will be fucking terrified! I always am when I’m trying to write something I don’t have much experience with, honestly. BUT. It would be kind of super fun to do, as well, I think.

I would think the things a composer wants most in a librettist are a sense of rhythm and an ability to manage characters–whether that’s in dialogue or not. There’s a scene somewhere in (I think) Sword where Breq’s attention starts cutting back & forth more and more rapidly. It struck me as one of the most musical passages in the trilogy. (I wish I could tell you where exactly it is.)

Huh! That’s an interesting thought.

There are passages I think of as musical, or even operatic, but not for any reason I can pin down, and I’m not sure those are my best go-to. It’s been really interesting just as an exercise, though!

no dude you’re totally a visiting scholar. like, professionally you are interested in children’s literature & shit. surely you’re exactly the sort of patron a special collections library should love? god i hate working in reading rooms though :(

You make a good point. Either way, it won’t hurt to email them and ask. (Other than, you know, the stress of emailing a stranger and asking for stuff.)
