"The New Heir"
Edrehasivar VII and his Empress, Csethiro, introduce their son to his family.
(R to L: Csethiro, Maia, Baby, Arbelan, Mireän, and Idra holding Ino)
arbelan raises maia au where the first time maia calls her mother is when csevet is in the other room and maia looks at her with wide eyes and asks in a voice tinged with panic, "Mother, what must I do?"
and arbelan is filled with so many warring emotions - a quiet, awed joy at the honour he has bestowed upon her with this new form of address, guilt for her stolen chance at motherhood, a fierce protectiveness for her child heading into the lion's den of the untheileneise court
And above it all, brimming pride at the ruler she knows he will become.
With a gentle finger under his chin, she tips his head up, a wordless reminder that he must bow to no one. Instantly, he straightens his back, squares his shoulders, and the edge of his panic recedes just a little.
"What must you do?" she asks in a calm, measured voice. "You must be emperor, my boy."
Another POV I’d love The Goblin Emperor from is Arbelan’s. It would be so fun. She’d be equally scathing and amused I think.
Also, Kiru/Arbelan anyone? (I know the whole celibacy thing but if even Maia thinks it could have been a front to get what she wanted, surely….)
ID: a simple lined full body sketch of arbelan drazharan from the goblin emperor, drawn in profile. she is a tall, heavy-set elven woman of middle age with a long pointed nose. she wears a sweeping dress with a shawl about her shoulders. she has simple earrings and tashin sticks and her hair is looped in an elegant updo. her expression is neutral, smiling slightly. she has a few scattered freckles here and there. she is looking straight forward, and her hands are clasped in front of her. end ID

"I had a heart, and you have consumed it." Arbelan/Varenechibel, Goblin Emperor, April prompts
22. I had a heart, and you have consumed it. (Arbelan/Varenechibel) (The Goblin Emperor)
There was never any love in the marriage between Varenechibel IV and his first wife; it was as much a business transaction as any emperor’s marriage was, and there was great need for the new emperor to take a wife – Varenechibel was an only son, as his father Varevesena had been before him, and the Drazhada were in desperate need of more heirs.
So there had been no expectation of love, from either of them. They had been brought up in the court, he as a prince and emperor-in-waiting, and she as a lady from a noble house with expectations, and they knew their duty.
But there had been hope as well as duty, once. A kind of hope.
A decade and more later, with neither love nor heirs to sustain them, there was nothing left but duty.
“Thou needst have no fear of my opposition,” she remembered telling Varenechibel, when last they spoke as husband and wife – indeed, the last time she had seen him, before his death, four wives later. “I am a loyal subject and faithful.”
“Is it thy head that speaks?” he had asked, courteous and cold, as it always was with him. “Or thy heart?”
Arbelan remembered how she had wanted to laugh at that, and cry, and scream. She had done nothing of the kind, of course. She was an empress in that moment, even if the title would now be nothing but a memory, an honorific like a slap to the face. “It is only my head that speaks now.”
She curtsied with deep, proud grace to the man who was henceforth not her husband, only her emperor. “I had a heart once, but thou hast consumed it. May it sustain thee, Serenity. I have no further use for it.”
🥺 tge au where arbelan raises maia after chenelo dies

"The dreamers of the day are dangerous men." — Goblin Emperor, Csethiro
It takes Csethiro Ceredin a long time to decide that she approves of her intended husband – a long time for her, that is, given that she prides herself on her decisiveness. In practice, it takes several months, two assassination attempts, many dancing lessons and a not-inconsiderable reassessment of not only Edrehasivar’s character, but that of her estranged great-aunt as well.
It is Great-Aunt Arbelan who gives Csethiro her first, and perhaps her most important early insight into the nature of the man she will marry, at one of the innumerable winter balls. Across the ballroom, they saw the young emperor with his chin in his hand, utterly lost in thought.
“He looks very far away,” Csethiro murmured to the former empress, her late grandfather’s sister.
Arbelan looked at the emperor and then gave her great-niece a very small, very knowing smile. “Yes, he’s a daydreamer. Just the mate for you, I think. The dreamers of the day are dangerous men, you know. Nothing they think or do can be contained by rule or custom. You’re very well-matched,” she finished blandly, no doubt for the pleasure of seeing Csethiro blush.
