not to imply there’s only one way to look at something in order to properly enjoy it, but i seriously think fma 03 roy mustang’s character only thrives when you read his arc as one of redemption. where he's a man out to redeem himself for past crimes, but only does so when he stops doing it for selfish reasons (to redeem himself, to absolve himself of feelings of guilt, and “to never have to follow a bad order again”), when he stops playing the game in an ends-justify-the-means approach, and makes a real sacrifice on behalf of others (giving up his career goals and possibly life to end a corrupt system that routinely orchestrates genocide and war instead of working complacently within the system in hopes of some day gaining power over it).
