This is a dumb thought, but I was just thinking about early metallurgists labeling ores "hot" and "cold" as they're mixing them with mercury. Lead/galena was supposedly a 'cold' ore. And I wonder if this has to do with the reactions they were trying to make place: if they were endothermic or exothermic.
