Although successful in the greater number of its matches, [Cavendish] was left out in the cold by the first-class clubs. Mr. Sutherland contended that their name was much to blame for this result. He thereupon began to agitate for a change, and eventually succeeded, after much opposition from the members, in obtaining his desire. The name of the club was changed from ‘Cavendish’ to ‘Salford’.
