Architect, thirteenth of make, I have heard you are skilled with sound, I have need for such a skill, my journal hasn't been holding up as a record keeping device for important experiences as writing something that is readable takes a lot of effort and I have to really force myself to do it. I want a device I can just speak into and listen back, easier than reading anyway.
The Thirteenth Architect had finished the assembly line.
They started inputting the necessary resources at one end and watched as it went to work. Various arms heated and shaped the glass and the metal, before turning putting the pieces together into a nice glass container fit to carry at least twelve silk flies and able to be opened and closed.
"Great!" The Thirteenth Architect exclaimed. "Now, as long as I keep feeding it resources, it should eventually make all of the containers I need!"
It was at that point that they noticed the Fifth Sentinel, and turned to him (Sorry if I'm misgendering; I think I can recall you referring to Fifth as 'he' before, but I may be misremembering).
"Oh, hello, Fifth-of-Make!" They greeted cheerfully. "I am skilled with sound, yes! And I quite like it! You say you need something that record and then play back sounds? I can do that!" The Thirteenth Architect went to their workshop for a moment before returning with materials.
"It's kind of similar to something I've been working on, but not quite. Still, it should be manageable!" With that, they got to work.
What they ultimately made looked vaguely like a gramophone, but with two pavillons; one for capturing sound, one for playing it. They created a few rune-etched, odd-looking cylinders, all of which contained a new rune: "Containment / Retention + Sound / Music + Protection + Space." They would contain and retain any sound they heard. There was also a small rectangular light on one flat side of each cylinder.
The recorder contained buttons with various runes, too. Every rune that Thirteenth etched had their motif: They each resembled a cross between circuitry and sheet music.
"Here you go!" The Thirteenth Architect exclaimed. "The cylinders can record and retain sound. You insert an empty cylinder into the device, on this slot," They gestured, "With how much of the rectangular light being filled indicating how full of sound the cylinder is. They only have a limited storage, you see.
"Anyway, when you have an empty cylinder inserted, you can press this button," They pointed to one button, another Containment + Sound rune, but this one was clearly different from the one on the cylinders, "To start recording. Once the cylinder has sound recorded on it, you can press this button." They pointed to a button etched with a rune of Negate + Containment (The Release symbol would've been better, but they didn't know how to invert runes yet).
"When pressed, that button will release the sound inside. I've made it so each cylinder permanently stores its respective recording, so that it won't get deleted every time you release the sound. You can use these various buttons. They pointed to several, with each button they pointed out corresponding to the function they were listing. "To adjust volume, skip ahead in the recording, or rewind the recording.
"This button," They pointed to one that had a rune similar to the one that started recording, but with the Negate symbol added. It was right next to the 'start recording' button, "Is how you stop recording. This button," They pointed to a button next to the button that started playing the cylinder's contents. Again, same rune, but with 'negate' added to it, "Is used to make the device cease playing sound."
"This was a very fun machine to invent! And it will help me in future projects! I think I will call it... The Audio Archiver. And you could call a collection of these special cylinders an 'audio archive.'"
