It had been one of the strangest Novembers they had seen in the city. With temperatures not quite reaching freezing, and the temperatures not quite warm enough to travel without a jacket, it had been difficult to adjust to the weather day by day.
It seemed like it had been difficult to adjust overall. Jackie held his Razr phone tightly in his pocket, keeping it protected from the icy rain that decided to pour outside. It wasn't a long walk to the Arcadium, but he wasn't in the mood to do a stake out. He was done with this adventure that he and Chase had started together. It was time to move onto other things, and Chase wasn't...quite on the same page.
Jackie absentmindedly fiddled with the gold engagement band on his finger, ignoring the dampness that was spreading through his sneakers. He hated the rain. He smiled a little, however, when he caught the shadowed outline of Chase behind a mailbox.
"How did I know you'd be here?" Jackie asked, his tone light. He was tired from the errands he had to do throughout the day, on top of his day job. Nonetheless, he managed to find the warmest sweater he owned, ready to sit with Chase.
"I'm onto something, Jacks." Chase murmured from his hiding spot. "I saw someone go in this morning. They never came out."
Chase sighed. Adjusting the ballcap on his head, he turned to face his fiance. Chase was equally as exhausted. "Are you hearing me?"
"I am. Maybe they went out another exit, Cha-"
"There is no other exit. You know this. They're still in there."
"Have you slept?" Jackie asked. Without thinking, he began to reach for Chase's shoulder. It wasn't long before Chase shrugged it off.
"I'm fine, Jacks." Chase said. He rolled his eyes, turning back towards the Arcadium. "I'm telling you. There's something we're missing."
"Sleep is what we're missing."
"I wasn't being funny this time." Jackie sighed. "Listen to yourself, Chase. It's...We've been at this for too long. We said if this wasn't done by November, we'd leave it."
"You're giving up?!" Chase scoffed. "You and I have been doing this for ages! We can't- We can't just give up now, Jackson."
"Don't 'Chaser' me. We're so close, and you're just tossing in the towel?"
Jackie couldn't help but look away. "I'm not willing to lose my mind over this. Those people are gone. We have an opportunity to leave this behind. It's time we do it."
"Then I'm leaving it behind."
Jackie froze. "That's not what I-"
"You're going to pack up and leave it all behind, huh? Me...too?"
"Your tone was pretty fucking clear."
"Don't put fucking words in my mouth."
Chase rolled his eyes. He grabbed his things, and made his way towards the Arcadium. "If you excuse me, then."
Jackie reached once more for Chase, taking his hand gently. "Don't...Don't go."
Chase shoved him off again, hurt in his eyes. "I have work to do, Jackson." Chase hissed. "Stick around. Or go. Hell, you won't even know I'm gone."
Chase vanished inside. Jackie stood frozen, in absolute shock as the lights within the Arcadium grew dark.
