Explain the epidemiology of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) 2. Discuss laboratory testing and diagnosis of HCV infection 3. Design a therapeutic regimen and monitoring plan for the treatment of HCV Presenter Bio: Dr. Marks received her medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed her Internal Medicine residency and Infectious Diseases fellowship training at New York-Presbyterian Hospital (NYPH) - Cornell. She focused her clinical training and research on HIV and hepatitis virus infections while completing Weill Cornell’s Master’s Degree in Clinical Investigation. She now cares for patients in New York-Presbyterian Hospital’s Hepatitis and HIV clinics and serves as an investigator in the Cornell Clinical Trials Unit and Center for Study of Hepatitis C. Her current research focuses on improving treatment outcomes in patients with HIV and hepatitis virus co-infections and includes studies of acute HCV as well as new treatment strategies for chronic HCV.

On Tuesday, June 27th, Dr. Douglas Dieterich of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai presented on: "Fever and elevated liver enzymes in a woman returning from India & other cases from the field" Lecture Objectives: 1. To explore the differential diagnosis of elevated alt 2. To describe the etiology of fever and elevated alt 3. To list the cases of diseases in patients returning from India Presenter Bio: Douglas Dieterich, MD, is currently Professor of Medicine in the Division of Liver Diseases and also Director of Continuing Medical Education in the Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, NY. He has a triple appointment in the divisions of Liver Disease, Gastroenterology, and Infectious Diseases. He graduated from Yale University and received his Doctorate of Medicine from New York University School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Bellevue Hospital Centre in New York, NY, where he was also a Fellow in the Division of Gastroenterology. He became Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine and then Clinical Professor of Medicine, both at New York University and remains as an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Medicine at New York University School of Medicine. Dr. Dieterich is an investigator for many ongoing clinical trials of new antiviral treatments for chronic hepatitis B & C. He is a member of many professional societies and has served on several committees of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Widely published, Dr. Dieterich is the author of numerous journal articles, abstracts and book chapters on viral hepatitis and AIDS-associated infections of the gastrointestinal tract and liver.

On Tuesday, June 13th, Dr. David C. Perlman of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai presented: “Conceptualizing Care Continua: Implications for the development of improved care and prevention continua for hepatitis C infection” About Dr. Perlman: David C. Perlman, MD is Professor of Medicine and Chief, Infectious Diseases at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College, where he double majored in Biochemistry and Anthropology. He received his MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, did his Internal Medicine Residency at NY Hospital-Cornell, and his Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Montefiore/Einstein. He has been a member of the ID Faculty at Beth Israel since completing his Fellowship training and is now Chief of ID at MSBI. He has over 25 years’ experience in research in HIV, HCV, TB and related co-morbidities with a focus on infections in substance using populations and he also remains active as a clinician in these areas. He has served as principal investigator on multi-center trials within NIAID’s AIDS Clinical Trials group, and on R01 grants from NIDA, and has had leadership roles in multicenter trials as part of NIDA’s Clinical Trails Network. He has served on NIH study sections, CDC consensus panels, committees within the ACTG and the NYS DOH AIDS Institute, and has over 100 per reviewed publications.

Describe the clinical management of Hepatitis C and HIV Presenter Bio: Dr. Nina Kim is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Adjunct Associate Professor of Global Health at the University of Washington (UW). She is the Director of the Madison HIV/Hepatitis Coinfection Clinic at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, WA. She received her medical degree at University of California San Francisco and completed her training in internal medicine and infectious disease at the University of Washington. She serves as the Associate Editor of Hepatitis C Online, a CDC-sponsored web-based curriculum and is the lead investigator for the Liver Disease section of the UW Center for AIDS Research Clinical Epidemiology & Health Services Research Core.

Wolf, MD, is a Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Diseases at New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY. Previously, he served on the faculties at the University of Cincinnati and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. In 1996, he established the Liver Transplant Program at Westchester Medical Center, where he continues to serve as its Medical Director. Dr. Wolf received his undergraduate degree from Yale University and his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York and a clinical and research fellowship in Gastroenterology-Hepatology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Wolf is a board certified Internist, Gastroenterologist, and Transplant Hepatologist. He has published more than one hundred papers and abstracts on topics including autoimmune hepatitis, portal hypertension, liver cancer and the economics of liver transplant.

On Tuesday, May 2nd, Dr. Myron Schwartz of the Recanati/Miller Transplantation Institute at the Mount Sinai Medical Center presented: "Management of HCV-related Hepatocellular Carcinoma" Learning Objectives: 1. Discuss at risk populations for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) 2. Review diagnosis of HCC 3. Discuss best practices for treating HCC Presenter Bio: Dr. Schwartz graduated from Jefferson Medical College AOA in 1976. After a year of rotating internship he joined the National Health Service Corps for three years as a general practitioner in rural Virginia. Dr. Schwartz came to Mount Sinai in 1981, completed residencies in general and vascular surgery, and joined the faculty in 1987. He worked with Charles Miller, MD to establish the Mount Sinai Liver Transplant Program in 1988, and since then has devoted his career to hepatobiliary surgery and transplantation. Over the years he has served as Director of Pediatric and Adult Liver Transplantation, and more recently has focused on liver cancer. Dr. Schwartz is currently the Clinical Director of the Mount Sinai Liver Cancer Program. Together with Research Director Josep Llovet MD, Dr Schwartz has led the collaborative effort that has put Mount Sinai at the forefront world-wide in liver cancer clinical care and clinical/translational research. Dr Schwartz has been funded by the NIH through a K24 Career Development Award entitled, “Systematic Integration of Patient-Oriented Research into the Clinical Pathway for Hepatocellular Carcinoma”. He has published over 300 papers in peer-reviewed journals, as well as 21 book chapters. Dr. Schwartz is an international authority on hepatic resection and transplantation for liver cancer, a subject about which he lectures frequently both in the U.S. and around the world.

On Tuesday, April 25th, Dr. Ayse Aytaman of the VA New York Harbor HCS Brooklyn presented: “Controversies in HCV Therapy” Presenter Objectives: 1. Understand the approach to hepatitis C antiviral therapy for patients with concomitant renal diseases and be able to choose the correct therapy. 2. Understand the evaluation and antiviral treatment strategies, which treatments NOT to use in patients with decompensated liver disease: Childs Pugh B and C. 3. Understand the importance and evaluation tools for drug drug interactions in patients undergoing antiviral therapy with special emphasis on medications decreasing the efficacy of medications and common drugs levels of which might be increased causing complications. 4. Understand the approach to patients who have failed already the double direct acting antiviral regimens and the patient population who might need urgent retreatment vs wait for upcoming treatments. Presenter Bio: Dr. Ayse Aytaman earned her medical degree from the University of Vienna, where she studied with a full scholarship from the Austrian Ministry of Education. After her residency and fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn, she joined the faculty at VA New York Harbor HCS in Brooklyn. She created the first multidisciplinary viral hepatitis team in 1999 with inclusion of pharmD and liver psychology in the VA system. In 2012, with a grant from VA Public Health, she established the first multi-facility and multidisciplinary, VISN-wide hepatocellular carcinoma team and SCAN ECHO liver cancer tumor board in the nation, utilizing heavily telehealth/virtual telemedicine technology. Dr. Aytaman’s clinical research interest areas are epidemiology and outcomes research in advanced liver diseases, hepatocellular carcinoma, system-based performance improvement in chronic and advanced liver diseases and pre- and post-transplant hepatitis C therapy.

On Tuesday, April 11th, Dr. Trang Vu of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai presented: “So Many HCV Regimens, So Little Time: How Can a New HCV Provider Make Effective Choices?” About Dr. Vu: Dr. Vu earned her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University school of medicine in 2012 and then remained at Johns Hopkins to complete her residency in Internal Medicine in 2015. She joined the faculty of division of general internal medicine at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in July 2015, and has since been working in the primary care based hepatitis C clinic, providing culturally competent and comprehensive health care to patients with hepatitis C. She has also been very active in the development and implementation of the HepCure toolkit platform to help increase provider capacity for treatment of hepatitis c in the community.
