Gerald Ford had learned to swim at a very young age from summers spent with his family at Ottawa Beach on Lake Michigan.

As a Boy Scout he earned his swimming badge and won a senior division trophy at Camp Showandassee in 1927. He also swam competitively with the Grand Rapids YMCA team during the spring of his senior year of high school.

After being elected to Congress and moving to Alexandria, Virginia, Ford had a pool installed in the backyard so he could do his daily laps. The move to the White House disrupted his routine, since the pool that had been there had been covered over to make space for a press room in the West Wing. He did take advantage of the Camp David pool during his weekend trips there.

Ford’s keen interest in swimming led to the formation of a White House Swimming Pool Committee. This organization collected private donations to fund a new outdoor pool. Construction began in May of 1975, and Ford took the first dip in the pool in early July.

President Ford swam whenever he could while in office. As of March 1976 his swimming regimen consisted of 22 lengths of the pool, equal to a quarter-mile, which took him 14 minutes to complete.
Even while traveling President Ford would seize the opportunity to get into the water. During his first face to face visit with French President Valery Giscard d’Estaing in Martinique the leaders even had an informal meeting in the pool.

The White House received numerous gifts recognizing President Ford’s love of swimming. Sonia Landau presented this playful elephant painting as a birthday present on July 14, 1975, as a decoration for the White House pool’s bathhouse.
