Rest in Peace, John McCain

Today John McCain will lie in state in the nation’s Capitol. His legacy is as mixed as his determination was unwavering. He ran for president twice, served in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and was one of the infamous “Keating 5″ senators accused of unethically interfering with regulators on behalf of a political donor (the only one whose political career survived the scandal, in fact) (https://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2018/aug/31/sen-john-mccain-fought-clean-money-politics-are-we/). Perhaps the most well-known aspect of his story, however, arises from a distinguished career in the military which saw McCain imprisoned in a Vietnamese camp from which he refused to leave when offered the chance because he thought it would lower the morale of the prisoners he would have left behind (https://www.businessinsider.com/john-mccain-refused-early-release-as-a-pow-in-vietnam-2018-8). He was for many people a true American hero.

Maybe that was the case and maybe it was not, but through it all, he always remained classy and respectful even when others did not.

 A CNN commentator I saw this week described him as the sort of old-school politician who would have fit perfectly running for president in 1980 but who, running in the 2000′s, stood apart from the rest. I had the pleasure of briefly meeting McCain in February 2008. As I recall, he had not yet chosen Palin as his running mate. I was studying at Birmingham-Southern College and had just completed an internship with a Republican Congressman during the previous summer. I was thrilled to not only meet the man everyone called a “maverick” but to stand on stage with him as he spoke--his words carefully measured but as firm as always.

My political opinions changed soon after the 2008 election and have continued evolving ever since then. Nevertheless, I always respected McCain for the brand of politician that he represented and his steadfast adherence to the principles he held dear. Men like McCain are increasingly rare, particularly in our modern political landscape. I will miss that as we should all.
