Day 28: Pendulum I used to think the spikes in Yuya's pendulum were symbolic of an angel locked up but then when I thought of Zarc I realized that the spikes actually meant the dragon spikes he gets from his fusion.
“You’re late!” She yelled to the newcomer as soon as he got within hearing range. “What took you so long?” Yuzu asked to him tapping her foot onto the floor, he was twenty-five minutes late, her nerves were crumbling away and she was beginning to regret this decision already.
“Well, excuse me, you try to sneak out of Yuya’s house without stepping into some animal’s tail, waiting for Yuya to get out of the bathroom or being offered some refreshments as a lowly trick to get information out of you.” Sora said stocking out his tongue to her.
Instead of taking the bait, she pointed at the huge chocolate he was eating and with her best deadpan voice she said:
“Yes, I can see it was so hard for you to resist temptation.” Sora seemed to have forgotten that it was in his mouth and he quickly attempted to hide it but Yuzu took his hand and took his treat away.
“Hey! Give it back! You have no idea how much that costs!” He yelled and almost took it from her but she was quicker dangling it above his head.
Sora was not the only one going through a growth spurt.
“I know it cost you nothing, because you probably convinced Yoko-san to give it to you” Yuzu stopped to give him a knowing look at Sora, who just grumbled under his breath. “I’ll give it back to you once we’re done.”
Afterward they walked for a while to the park, until Yuzu found a relatively empty place where they could get down to business.
“Is this about Serena again?” Sora asked sighing. “I already told you everything I know about her, she wasn’t exactly outgoing and is not like the Professor allowed her to wander around all that much.”
“Is not just about her, it’s about all of them.” Yuzu said. “Is just... I thought the feeling of overflowing memories, feelings... all kinds of stuff would eventually fade, that somehow we’d just end up...” She trailed off, no knowing how finish the sentence.
“Fusioned?” Sora asked.
“That’s... one way to put it.” Yuzu admitted. “But I don’t know I feel so... selfish.”
“Selfish?” He repeated once and she knew his eyes wandered off to her wrist, empty now. “Is it because only you came back?”
“Maybe? I mean I know this is something Yuya could help me about, but... he has the dragons you know? I’ve heard him talking with them through these cards, I can’t do that it’s like this endless... banging in my mind and I can’t do anything about it and just want it stop.”
“You want your old life back.” It wasn’t a question and Sora didn’t expect an answer. “Have you ever thought about asking Reiji?”
“Reiji Akaba? What does he have to do with this?” Yuzu asked surprised, if she was quite honest she had not spared a thought about him in a quite a while.
“Dunno? Maybe that fact that Reira will probably experience something similar in the future, weren’t both Zarc and Ray inside of him now? Maybe he can even help you all to...” The way he moved his finger as if to break something would be hilarious in any other situation.
“I think it’s a baby girl now, and the Nature Cards are gone.” She reminded him.
“Whatever, do you really think the Reiji we know will have done nothing by then? Yuya created the Pendulum cards out of thin air and Reiji still found a way to make his own.” Sora asked. “If you ask him I’m sure he’ll help you, and if you ask me his family own you a big deal, you could at least ask him for some compensation you know? Then maybe we can finally remodel Yushow Duel School”
The way he smiled at saying that ridiculous thing was her undoing and they both burst into laughter, the type that made her belly hurt and her cheeks ache, before she finally calmed down.
“That’s not nice....Reiji is not at fault for his father’s mistakes.” She said after wiping her eyes.
“Tch, you take the fun out of everything.” Sora said a bit out of breath. “Hey, if you need someone to go an intimidate them with, you know you can always count with the All Mighty Teacher right?”
Day 1 of the Arc-V Anniversary 30 Day Challenge!! Prompt 1: "Happy 3-Year Anniversary!" So here is Entertainment Zarc! Just a quick one but I hope I can do some digital stuff for this!
Hi guys! It’s been 1000 years and Arc-V ended on me but uh, here’s the next section?
sorry though, seriously, it’s still going~
part 1 is here
part 2 is here
(part 3)
Yuuya might have thought he was subtle, but he failed. Though he was growing up and changing fast these days, Sakaki Yoko was especially sensitive to her son’s shifts in mood, and there was very little that he could hide from her.
It took less than two days for her to realize that Yuuya was feeling down, and that he was hiding something too—whether or not those two things were related would have to come later, but she suspected they were.
Oh, on the outside her son talked a good game—he yelled loud morning greetings and wolfed down breakfast, came back loudly in the evenings and whined at the pets for trying to finish his dinner for him. But Yuuya’s garnet eyes were missing much of their spark, and when he wasn’t overperforming to avoid suspicion he was muted and withdrawn.
She thought at first that perhaps Yuuya had overheard her hushed conversation with Shuuzou about finances and how they were going to keep You Show Duel School open into next year. The phone call had been a necessary one, and it had happened the night after he’d finally come home from his long walk with all that melted ice cream—but then she remembered that his taciturn behavior predated that day by just a little bit, and she’d been careful not to leave any of their mounting bills around the house this month.
(And anyway, if Yuuya had known how dire things were for his father’s school, that would be an upset he couldn’t hide from anyone. He’d have confessed to Yuzu and the whole class of kids would have known by the weekend.)
Yoko had asked Shuuzou about the duels between You Show and LDS the day after they’d happened, if only to reassure herself that her husband’s duel school wouldn’t be consolidated by those mad businessmen anytime soon. His report hadn’t given her any reason to worry or connect Akaba Himika’s recent visit to her son’s flagging enthusiasm—until a week had gone by, and then two, with no change in his behavior since the plunge from that day.
Even Sora Shuin’in, their continuous houseguest, had noticed Yuuya’s halfhearted attempts to avoid him or blow him off whenever he begged for more dueling lessons, followed him up and down the stairs and flattered Yoko herself with more compliments. The young boy and young mother had started exchanging looks every time Yuuya played with his pendulum necklace at the table, looking dazed the whole time.
But although Yoko was more attuned to her child than most mothers, it did take her an embarrassingly long time to notice that each time Yuuya came down to eat these days he had his wrists covered—and he’d not said a word about his soulmate since the day he was set to meet them.
…Ah.
So that was it—Yuuya’s behavior was centered around whatever had happened the day he’d dueled those children from LDS. Considering his barely-contained excitement the morning he was meant to meet them, this new reticent behavior about the same subject made some sense. But even knowing that much didn’t fill in enough of the puzzle.
Had her son met his soulmate after all, and found them lacking? Or had he not, and was the lack of conclusion bothering him?
And why on earth was he hiding his wrist from her, when the timer on it should have run out by now?
Watching him dash out the door to school now, Yoko sighed. Things had been so much easier with herself and Yuushou. She’d felt stirrings of attraction for him from the moment they’d met, even though she denied it at the time. Once Yuushou stopped trying to show off for her all the time and all over the city, they’d spent every waking moment together until they could be bound legally as they were spiritually.
Being attracted to Yuushou meant she hadn’t needed to figure out what his place in her life would be as her soulmate; she’d simply carved an appropriate space for him in her heart, her bed and her life and he had done the same for her. But Yuuya…
Yuuya’s interests were different than hers, or those of many of his other peers. He hadn’t told her yet, but Yoko didn’t need to be told; she lived with him, they spent lots of time together bonding, and she was very well aware of her son’s Internet history.
It wasn’t safe to narrow anything down yet, but Yoko couldn’t help but do so anyway: either Yuuya had met his soulmate when the LDS students ambushed him, and found that he couldn’t bond with someone who had tried to take his father’s school from them, or he’d missed meeting his soulmate entirely because of the LDS ambush, or…
…or his soulmate could have been a girl, someone Yuuya could never quite get as close to as he might secretly wish.
Yoko knew her son. He was a flashy showoff like his father, and like his father he was a romantic too. Even if he’d never admitted it, having a soulmate was his chance to find someone—to find a boy—who would be a supportive, understanding partner throughout his life. As much as Yuuya valued friends, as much as more friends was always a merrier state, he’d craved more ever since his father’s disappearance.
Well.
She might not know exactly what was still bothering her boy, but that didn’t stop her from finding out what that was! She could be Detective Yoko, solving the mystery of Yuuya’s lost smile, and getting it back for him in the process.
Humming, she gathered the dishes, including Sora’s shiny plate and Yuuya’s half-finished one, planning to look online for a proper detective hat and coat after she cleaned up.
Sakaki Yoko, Detective. Ooooh, I like the sound of that!
This may say Day 30 but I have ONE MORE piece for this event which, if things go well, will be finished and posted tomorrow :')
But for today....the prompt is baton pass! That sounded to me like the passing of the torch from Arc V to VRAINS, so...here's this bittersweet pic :')
Thank you, Arc V for being a beautiful, wonderful source of love and inspiration! Every single episode was an absolute joy to wait for and watch, and I'll miss waiting for you every Saturday night. Even though it's over, Arc V will always be my favorite franchise, and I'll never forget what the show and it's characters did for me and continue to do for me.
And good luck now to Yusaku, Aoi, and the rest of the VRAINS cast! I'm so excited to meet you and your setting and world, and I can't wait to be a part of the experience <3
