Fic rec: Lost In The Woods
It is rare to find a crossover that solves problems within both of the source canons. A lot of crossovers are really only interested in seeing one group of people bounce of another group, not worldbuilding for either of the two.
Ardwolf’s “Lost In The Woods” is a Star Trek/Firefly crossover that explains a Star Trek problem that I hadn’t even really noticed was a problem until I saw the explanation, and comes up with the best explanation ever for Firefly’s Reavers, an explanation that is so much infinitely better than what we got in canon that as far as I’m concerned, it is canon.
In the very first chapter, Q appears on the bridge of the Enterprise, and Picard is enraged, far colder to Q than he’s ever been shown. This is, as it turns out, because this is happening after “Q Who” (but before “Deja Q”), and Picard is reacting to the death of 18 crewmembers. My first take on this as I read this chapter was that Picard was out of character -- he’s a lot less cold to Q in “Deja Q” (even if he does throw him in the brig, he at least gives Q sanctuary.)
But then, as I read on, Q offers Picard a present -- not as an apology, simply as a guest gift to a host -- and Picard demands his dead crewmembers back, certain that Q can’t comply. Q does. 18 formerly dead crewpeople appear on the bridge, confused. And at that point I realized that the story had just solved a problem I hadn’t even realized was there -- why does Picard show Q any compassion whatsoever after getting 18 people killed? Picard’s not friendly to Q in Deja Q, but he’s not as outright hostile as you’d think he would be, considering that Q caused the death of 18 people. This scene changes the emotional dynamics, such that Picard is still deeply irritated with Q, and remains so, but now it makes a lot more sense that he’d grant Q the sanctuary he requested.
Then Q promptly throws them into the alternate universe of Firefly, where the entire civilization is built on the moons around a gas giant. I am not sure they ever explained, in series, why they referred to it as the System, but this explanation could well be canon. Of course, they end up encountering Serenity.
Both crews, and Q, are well in character. (Particularly River, who does something we’ve all wanted to see someone do to Q. :-)) There is a fantastic explanation for the Reavers, and why it is that they can sometimes turn their victims into Reavers (the idea that men go insane and turn into psychotic killers that join their torturers, because they’ve been tortured, is a horrible notion, particularly the way it happened in Firefly, where the guy had been rescued and you couldn’t even explain it with Stockholm syndrome. Sheer stupidity that doesn’t take into account anything about human psychology. The explanation Ardwolf comes up with is infinitely better.) And the reason why Q has engineered this encounter is perfectly in character (both here, and at a deeper level, in the sequel.)
Plus, I’m a sucker for stories where a connection is made between Q and Coyote.
Recommended for fans of either Firefly or Star Trek TNG, but especially for fans of both.
