Host cancelled my stay that was booked months in advance with less than a 4 days notice. HELP, ARE THEY ALLOWED TO DO THIS?!?!
TL:DR at the end
Here in Toronto we have a civic holiday during the first week of August with plenty happening in the city (festivals, events etc.) One of those events is Caribana.
My friends and I decided to play Mas this year for Caribana (for those who are unfamiliar, Caribana is this big festival, it's a celebration of Caribbean culture, where you dress up in costume to march in the parade listening to Soca, Dancehall music, it's a great time).
Anyway, my friends and I all live outside of Toronto and because we bought our costumes to march in the parade we decided it would be best to get an airbnb in Toronto as we would need to be at the parade grounds for 9am sharp.
Finding a place for Caribana weekend would be tough if you waited til' the last minute because of all the international travellers that come up here for the event. So we decided to be proactive and booked our airbnb in March. This booking had a 60 strict cancellation policy (meaning a 50% refund up until 60 days of check- in). Mind you, we had no intentions of cancelling as this place was prime position, and a good price. Also with the super strict cancellation fee we took this as; "Great the host doesn't want us to cancel either if they have this strict cancellation policy, so we're good, we've gotten the hardest part of our trip plans out of the way".
BUT BOY, OH BOY WERE WE SADLY MISTAKEN!!
Cut to today, 4 months after we booked the airbnb and less than 4 days from when we were supposed to check in (supposed to check this Friday) we get an inbox saying our reservation has been cancelled.
Honestly, my friends and I are livid to say the least, after trying to be prepared and proactive with planning a trip literally 4 months in advance and for the host to be like, thanks for the money but I'm going to cancel your stay and hike up the prices and leave you high a dry. This is the second time this has happened, truly thought this time would be different though because of the strict cancellation policy.
WHY ISN'T THE SUPER STRICT CANCELLATION POLICY A TWO-WAY STREET??? If a guest can't cancel within 60 days of a check- in, then neither should a host be able to. It seems that there is all this protection for the hosts but not so much for the guests How are we supposed to find a airbnb now LESS THAN 4 DAYS PRIOR?? The prices of airbnb's in the same area have more than doubled and we certainly can't afford them.
What makes matters worse is that we've already bought our costumes for the parade which were 300+ each. All we wanted was a place to rest our head for the Friday so we can make it to the parade on time for Saturday morning.
I'm posting to ask, is there anything we can do about this? Is the host really allowed to do this? We haven't even gotten our refund back ( I like how they are quick to take our money, but when it comes to refunds it takes forever smh). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for listening to my rant.
TL:DR : booked an Airbnb that had a super strict 60 day cancellation policy only for them to cancel leaving us high and dry scrambling for another place less than 4 days before our trip. Help any suggestions? Can they do this?
