“Thank you London, and Good Night!!!”..

...actually not quite, this was someway through the very first song of Black Stone Cherry’s electric set. 

Plunger has no idea how the Kentucky quartet managed to sit still through their opening acoustic set, such was the manic toddler-on-tartrazine hyperactivity they displayed in the second. But they did, and it was an surprisingly rootsy collection of mid-tempo southern anthems,tailor-made for the full-house to belt along to, and boy did they... Plunger had the slightly uneasy feeling of being an infidel among the faithful, not knowing all the words.

This was also the first time Plunger had witnessed a digital-era lighters-in-the-air moment, as at a particularly anthemic moment several hundred iPhone torches were raised and waved gently back and forth in a brighter-than-the-house-lights (and admittedly eye-moistening) display.

But the second set topped that for impressive theatrics, as the band tore through a relentlessly heavy selection of bombast-by-numbers all while running the length and breadth of the stage or throwing classic rock icon poses on the specially provided posing podia. Plunger doesn’t remember there being flash pots, but there should have been...

Maybe not entirely Plunger’s cup of Jack Daniels but 1,998 other people there (and indeed the 2,000 more on the second night) lapped it up.
