congratulations, Mia! you have been accepted as Major Barbie Davies (fc: Taraji P Henson)! Mia, both of your apps were so good that it was almost impossible to choose between them -- but ultimately, I had to go with Davies because I absolutely adore the way that you’ve paired her down-to-earth determination with her idealism -- two traits that seem so opposed to one another, and yet that meet perfectly in Barbie and your bio for her. I’m so eager to see how she melds with the rest of the crew! one part of your app that I just loved reading was:

When you got the call from the President, you were in Bangkok, and you had to fly all the way back to DC, unable to almost process the news. Not that you had too many to celebrate with - you guessed you could settle for hanging out with close friends and your nieces and nephews, but it still hung there. You could almost hear your father’s voice in your head, thudding, asking you: Can you do this?

Could you, Major Barbara Davies of the United States Marine Corps, do this? Succeed at piloting a ship designed to reach the final frontier, and stay steady? You guessed you could, and besides, you were guessing that it didn’t really matter whether your could or not anyways. Either way, the mission would swallow you up.

You reckoned the only thing to do was dive in.

congratulations, Emma! you have been accepted as Li-Na Zhōu (fc: Ming-Na Wen)! It honestly took me a while to decide about this application -- not because it wasn’t amazing, but simply because it wasn’t what I expected of Zhōu. And yet, the more I reflected on it after reading it and the more I thought, the more I fell in love with a commander whose accomplishments are not necessarily remarkable, who may not be better educated or more experienced than the rest of the crew, but who made it where she is out of patient, steady diligence. She’s reliable and demanding and hardworking and I think I love what it says that her hardwork has paid off to get here where she is today. Your bio was so lovely, but one part I particularly liked was:

So, they sat together, at their usual breakfast, and her mother told her that to know what she wanted, she had to understand where she was. Eighteen years old, working so hard she slept dreamlessly every night, Li-Na had to think more than she ever had before about exactly what her life was. It was a small house, with one bedroom. It was eating the same five meals over and over. It was getting six hours of sleep. It was working and school. It was right here on the ground. It was her hands always covered in a thin layer of dirt because she did not have the time to clean them after work if she wanted to get home and eat something small before she slept.

It meant finding a profession where her hands would always be a little dirty, so she could go somewhere that there would not be an ounce of dust and dirt to cling to her. Somewhere light, so she’d never walk home in the dark. Somewhere spacious so she could stretch out her arms and not feel like she had nowhere to go when she craved a moment of solitude. She wanted to touch the stars. She wanted to go to space. So, she had to study the Earth.

congratulations, Spooky! you have been accepted as Dr. Marisol Velasquez (fc: Rosario Dawson)! I think what stood out to me most about your application as I read it was the absolute preeminence of love to Marisol, and how much growing up being surrounded by love has influenced the person they are today. I think there’s a real temptation to see a character who is a skeptic and to make them heatless, but Marisol is nothing but heart, and I love that their hope for this mission is to find the answers to the questions they have about themself, regardless of what ends up being on Proxima B. one particularly beautiful part of your bio that really stuck with me was:

Marisol grew like a weed, or fast-climbing ivy, or a gigantic sunflower, nurtured as they were by so many gentle hands and kind words. It was all they seemed to need to thrive, apart from some sunlight and a little water. They were always playing outside as a kid, bending their sun-kissed face up into the light, chasing dandelion fluff and fireflies, and flinging themselves with abandon into watering holes and open hydrants in the streets. They were the type of kid with a new best friend every week, or with fifty best friends, finding it natural and easy to get along with whoever they liked the company of. They often mirrored and mimicked the personalities of those they liked best, but more than that they incorporated these traits into themselves effortlessly, as if they had always been there waiting to emerge, like late summer blooms.

congratulations, Dani! you have been accepted as Eli Ka'aukai (fc: Taika Waititi)! I loved how much this interpretation of Ka'aukai’s skeleton surprised me; it took a bit of adjustment to see how much sense the personality you’ve given him makes for the character but after reading all the way through your app I was really interesting in seeing how Eli will interact with the rest of the crew. I loved your mockblog as well, and I’m a total sucker for a good mockblog. one piece of your application that really stuck with me was:

The definition of 'deadpan’ with the right amount of resting bitch face. He’s there, he’s listening, but his features hardly give away where his opinion stands. Even the crew is having a good time, telling jokes, he’s the one not laughing. They’ve also given up on the space puns on him. He refuses to see it as a bad thing, though— he’s professional, that’s all. Focused. “You didn’t have to tell me you were an engineer,” a partner once told him. “Your face says it.” And even if Eli didn’t know what that meant exactly, he knew they were right.

congratulations, Sarah! you have been accepted as Anirudh Rajan (fc: Rahul Kohli)! Ani is such an unexpectedly positive force and I’m honestly delighted by it. The path he took to get where he is now is so unexpected and interesting that I found myself holding my breath while reading your bio because I was so excited to see how you would wrap it all together. And, of course, his unironic love of Nicki Minaj and Carly Rae Jepsen is ideal, and I hope he plays lots of their music on the ship because that’s exactly what this crew needs. So much of your writing in this app was stunning, but one bit that I found myself thinking of again and again was:

He would tell them he was just walking new horizons; he could wander back when the time came, that he could keep his legs lean and strong in the meantime. But the truth of it was no, it was not something he missed. Why miss something he no longer needed? A drowning man doesn’t miss the life raft that drags him to shore.

And that was how he saw it, too. He’d made it to shore, no more drowning. No more running away. It didn’t occurred to him, even when he kissed his mother on the cheek, boarded the plane halfway around the world to Massachusetts, that perhaps he was still swimming.

congratulations, Jules! you have been accepted as Joseph Levesque (fc: Adam Beach)! quite honestly, Jules, every single piece of your application was stunning. on top of how much thought you’ve clearly given the character and how well-written every bit of it is, the facts work so perfectly for Levesque -- his discipline, his impassivity, his military background, his former relationship. I can’t wait to see his stoic personality come up against the rest of the crew, and watch his calculated thrillseeking play out. picking just one piece of your application to highlight here was nearly impossible, but I did manage to settle on this:

You are not the picture of a thrillseeker. You are a role model. You were an Air Cadet, you went to RMC. You are an engineer, a pilot, a physicist. You are an inspiration to the kids in your home nation. You are pragmatic to a fault, and a realist – but never a cynicist. You live your life like this — working so hard, pushing all the boundaries laid before you — because it gets you as close as you can possibly be to that feeling. Your mother told you to know your limits, and you learned them intimately; you create them, carefully measured and perfectly calculated, so you never feel constrained. You have questioned orders, you have taken risks, you have done things that are inadvisable to do — you drive too fast too late at night, but here’s the thing: you don’t spin off the road, and you always wear your seatbelt.

Whatever behaviour you put forth that some would deem reckless isn’t, because you’ve already calculated the crash and you’ve corrected for it.

From the first image of little Emma sitting with the host’s dog at a party reading a book, I knew I wanted to have her as a part of the crew, and everything from there just confirmed that. the blend of personality traits you gave her, from her gentle nature or her unwitting selfishness play so well together and I can’t wait to see her interact with the rest of the crew, and I loved that you added a section on her research interests, and also that you tied in her relationship with Nils, her research rival! my favorite part of your application was:

“Time?” Emma answered cautiously. No, that was too tentative and foolish. She knew that if she was going to get into this program, she needed to come up with something better than that. Drumming her fingers on the table, she asked, “Am I allowed to choose a different answer?”

“Go ahead,” the interviewer said.

congratulations, Kayla! you have been accepted as Carina Bell (fc: Hettiene Park)! Carina is exactly what I hoped for when I first wrote Bell’s skeleton, but at the same time she is so much more -- you captured the skepticism, pragmatism, and determined confidence that I imagined her having, and yet the little details you added, like her brother’s death and her radio show, are what really brought her to life for me. I can’t wait to see her competitive side and her anxiety come into play as the crew runs into trouble, and to see where you take her from here! one part of your app that I really loved was:

Your experience in radio years ago was what flagged you for this mission. SpaceX combed every file, looked at every employee. Some whispered they even looked at the janitors. They were looking for someone practical, someone good at spinning even the worst of situations. When they first told you about the new assignment, you laughed. Of course, the Alpha Message had interested you. Hell, it had caught the attention of the entire world. It just never occurred to you that, out of the entire company dedicated to space travel, they would need you.
