similar thoughts regarding the v-day video. It was awful that it was leaked, as it was obviously something they wanted to keep private, but acting like it didn't happen/we didn't all see it makes it more of an issue. Acting like *wink wink nudge nudge*" oooo the v-day video" just trivialises it and makes it into a joke. I'd rather see that it was very sweet, and it was very sad that it was leaked without their consent. Making it into a phandom joke just leaves a bad taste.

Yeah, absolutely. Personally I don’t mind the memes that were made out of it (in recent times) because dealing with bad things that happened with a sense of humour usually helps. But acting like it doesn’t exist or pretending to not have seen it is just… mockery. And that does leave a bad taste. Mystifying the video also blows it way out of proportion. It was a really sweet, little Valentine’s gift between two young men who were in the very beginning of their relationship. Like, it’s the most normal thing in the world. The fact that YouTube had a glitch and unprivated it sucks, that was a really shitty thing to happen, but it was no one’s fault. People in the fandom watching it – inevitable. People, especially really young people, showing it around without realising what it would do to Dan (and Phil) – sadly to be expected and kind of understandable back in 2012. The fact that people still spread it like wildfire after they saw that Phil was taking down the video left and right with copyright claims, saw how Dan was freaking out, people still spreading it who must’ve known it was real and therefore who could’ve anticipated that a really bad, really shitty thing had just happened in form of a forced coming-out of a closeted couple – incredibly vile.

There were so many layers to this whole thing but it’s been so many years and like I said, we cannot undo it, so let’s at least not pretend it never happened because Dan sure as hell cannot act like it didn’t either.

It was a collective fever dream and to this day, people who lived through the phandom from like 2011-2014 are still unsure if what they experienced was ever real in the first place.
