Ariel did not “give up her voice/ being a mermaid for a man”
Ariel always wanted to be in the human world, it’s clear from the beginning that she wants to know what’s like to live beyond the sea. She isn’t interested in life under the water and she consistently “fails” to attend her duties as a princess because of it. All she is interested in is exploring sunken ships and such.
Eric is charming and interesting, she saved his life and sang to him, of course she has a crush, of course she wants to know him. He’s new and a peak into the world and culture that marvels her. But he is NOT the only reason why she goes up.
She wouldn’t have done anything but dream about being human with her crush if King Triton didn’t come in and DESTROY ALL OF HER STUFF?
Like, honestly, imagine you are a 16 yo and your dad just barges in your most private, precious space and destroys all the things you have been collecting for years, your treasures, everything that’s the most important to you.
Would you be happy about it? Would you want to stay there with people who don’t understand you and don’t respect your interests?
I know I wouldn’t.
The difference is that none of us would have a witch saying she can not only give you a way out, but also the chance to get close to your crush.
Ursula doesn’t approach her just at any given time, she waits until Ariel is hurt and mad to offer her the deal. Because she knows Ariel probably wouldn’t have taken it at any other time.
Trading her voice for legs is not something Ariel does for Eric. Is something she does for herself. For what she thinks is her dream: to know the surface, and also the chance of getting true love with her crush? Fucking bonus. It’s probably a stupid decision, but she’s 16! She’s supposed to make impulsive decisions like that. Tell me you wouldn’t have at least considered. At. 16. Super mad at your parents. Your crush right there. I’m not 16 and I still do stupid, dumb things to get near my crushes.
So, yeah, you can say it was dumb, if you want, you can say it was impulsive, but, PLEASE, stop saying she just gave up her voice for a man, because that makes it seem like her having a crush on Eric was of more impact in her life than her dreams and her treasures being destroyed.
