 she   knows   she   loves   him.   she’d   gotten   drunk   once   and   talked   to   vex   and   keyleth   and   pike   all   about   it,   more   honest   with   them   than   she’d   ever   been   with   herself.   shaun   must   have   been   tired   of   hearing   caleb’s   name   at   some   point,   but   if   he   was,   he   never   said   so,   and   the   burst   of   gratitude   she   feels   even   now   is   a   solar   flame.   so   she   knows   she   loves   him,   the   kind   of   love   that   burrowed   under   her   skin   for   five   years   and   when   lucien   was   reaching   through   her   chest   to   rip   out   her   heart,   vax’s   hand   just   out   of   her   reach,   it   was   his   voice,   then   caduceus’,   which   called   her   back,   and   well.

“why is marriage so dumb?” laerryn groans loudly, more or less throwing herself across one of patia’s many, extravagant chaise longues. she’s never been one who cared much about appearances but in the privacy of one of her oldest friends’ homes, she takes that to an extreme.  she lies on the longue with one of her arms spilling over the side, staring straight up at the vaulted ceiling.

“don’t ever get married, p,” she offers the advice free of charge. “it’s forced interaction. it’s like you get married to someone, and suddenly they expect you to hang out with them all the time,” laerryn props herself up on her arms and reaches for the flute of champagne that patia has at the ready. “i love quay, i do, but just because we’re married doesn’t mean i’m just going to bail on my life’s work to have coffee with them randomly in the middle of the day.”

“ wh-why  would  i  lie ? ”          cassandra  attempts ,  clasping  her  hands  behind  her  back .          “ honestly ,  sister ,  it’s  almost  as  if  you  don’t  trust  me . ”          even  as  she  speaks ,  though ,  she  briefly  glances  over  her  shoulder  to  make  sure  that  anders  isn’t  hunting  her  down  --  or  ,  worse ,  to  make  sure  that  anders  hasn’t  sent  percy  to  do  so .     her  shoulders  drop  slightly  after  a  second  --  cassandra  isn’t  a  very  good  liar .     she’s  much  better  at  sneaking  around ,  and  she’s  already  failed  at  that  today .          “ look ,  i  --  please  take  me  with  you .     i  don’t  want  to  be  cooped  up  in  here  all  day  today . ”

“Yes.” Vax responded to Kashaw’s question, crossing his arms over his chest. “It’s not fancy or anything, but it’s home.” The only home he’d had for a long time. If he was being totally honest he wasn’t sure how to deal with the presence of the human cleric. He didn’t seem like a bad guy by any stretch of the imagination-he was actually quite tolerable if Vax was being honest-but new people tended to make him wary.

       Yasha makes a noise in the back of her throat like a low, soft, tuneless hum. It’s not that she’s necessarily more talkative in more familiar company -- with Molly, even back home. It’s just that she knows that they are more apt at translating her silences. And as much as she senses a bit of kindred soul in Caleb ( someone more comfortable, perhaps, with saying less ) it’s not something she’s sure about and, as such, still feels the need to weigh each word carefully before she spins a sentence. 

       ❛ -- Our skillsets are complementary. ❜ In battle, knowing one’s strengths and their niche is the difference between life and death. Yasha knows her way with a blade; Caleb knows his way with books and plans and magic. It only makes sense that she accompany him on a quest that might threaten any kind of danger. But more than that... ❛ And I -- would like to make sure that you come back safely. ❜ 

       The bonds she is making with this group -- the Mighty Nein, she thinks fondly -- are still fragile things. They’re new, and so small and breakable. If she doesn’t protect these relationships -- these people -- she’s going to lose them. And if that’s all she can give them, she hopes it’s enough.
