🗯️What do you think is the most divisive or controversial aspect to your WIP?

I had to think on this one a Lot. And I honestly think the most divisive/controversial aspect of my WIP may be the fact that it is what some would argue a story about ‘Overcoming Disability’.

From the very start, and even just from the summary on my WIP intro, I make it very clear that Skylar’s cerebral palsy is a lot of what holds her back from living the life she wants. It has isolated her from her peers, contributed to severe, crippling social anxiety that she’s canonically gone to therapy for, and has given her parents (mom in particular) an unfair amount of control over her born from fear and paranoia that feeds into her own mental health.

Skylar is the type of person who feels stifled if she’s kept in one position of her life too long, and a lot of the plot moves forward with her attempts to break into her independence. I can see the argument of people not wanting to read a book where a protagonist’s disability is seen as an obstacle or plot device, and I agree that a character should be able to exist outside of their limitations. Much in the same way that tv shows and books have a place for both coming out stories and stories where the characters just happen to be queer, there should be a similar variety for characters with disabilities too. And to able-bodied and neurotypical readers, I can see why perhaps reading about a strong-minded woman with a disability learning to adapt after moving out for the first time has potential for being misconstrued as inspiration porn.

This is a story about disability, Skylar’s CP is a very important part of who she is and the plot in general. But I Never Asked For This is also so much more than that. It’s a book of acceptance and reconnection and queer love and exploring one’s identity and finding belonging in a world that doesn’t want you to, and I hope my readers will see that. Authors with disabilities deserve a space to write from their own experiences, and that is exactly what I’m trying to do no matter what anyone else thinks about it.
