Hands covered the back of his hands and his neck, trying to shield himself from the falling glass that was sure to fall down on him any minute. Nico did his best not to get involved in the knock-down drag-out fights of the more aggressive superheroes, but there was sometimes only so much you could do, and if there wasn’t enough warning that a fight was coming, then all you could do was duck.
But this wasn’t even an accidental, in-the-wrong-place-at-the-wrong-time situation, Nico was in the thick of it with some bad guys who definitely wanted him gone. And if the guy yelling at him didn’t send the message, the car thrown directly at his head did. Nico thought he was done for, ducking and rolling as best as he could, trying to get out of sight and get into hiding, but he’d tripped and fallen like in a bad movie or a nightmare. Breath shuddering in his lungs as he tried to scramble back to his feet, hands scrapping over the pavement, he only got his head out of the way at the last minute, a hotdog stand just sailing over him to crash into a window.
But the impact of the glass never came and Nico looked up to see another hero, hands raised in a blocking gesture and the glass falling a good three feet away from them in a neat sphere. “Woah,” he murmured, slowly gathering his feet under him as he pulled himself upright. “Uh, thank you,” he started to say before he stopped himself, seeing the other’s face under his mask, a thin stream of blood leaking from his nose. “Oh no.”
