I really like Ines and Hoederer as a couple, but I almost never like any fanart of them as such, and I think I finally figured out why.

My issue is that people portray them as too loving.

These are two people who are chronically incapable of telling anyone that they like them. Can you seriously imagine Ines telling anyone that she loves them? To hug someone? I cannot.

Hoederer is... not as hard to imagine it but I still doubt he would do it.

They are just not affectionate people, which is part of what makes them enjoyable. So portraying them being affectionate with each other feels off to me.

It took Ines most of chapter 12 to admit internally to herself that she cares about anyone. And most of chapter 13 to admit out loud that she cares about Hoederer and W (reminder she has not been able to admit this despite her and Hoederer living together since they were kids judging by furniture descriptions). Hoederer spends a lot more time brooding about the war torn history of the sarkaz and avoiding talking about anyone's feelings (he was just going to ignore W having clear, huge mental problems that was actively endangering herself and the people around her because it would be too awkward to talk to her about it, until Ines convinced him to do so).

And when he does he tries to go all tough love, which is what he does every time. From telling her she has to hang people and she is being too soft back in darknights (sidenote but it is interesting both darknights and chapter 8 have parts where Talulah and W refuse to hang traitors, and chapter 8 is also where Amiya rejects the notion that sacrifice is necessary, but rather sees it as a failure, the idea of having to give up some lives to preserve others is rejected by all three, although with totally different arguments given, all within like 2 months of updates, also an idea that comes up more in chapter 8 and in later chapters like 14), to being very harsh to her about her complicated issues regarding Theresa and very complicated emotions about Amiya born from said issues. From his perspective he is trying to help her, but he can't be nice about it because Hoederer is honestly bad at dealing with emotions. And this blows up in this scene! She just gets mad at him and runs out of the conversation in the end. And then she acts like it never happened later.

Speaking of, the campfire scene does have one of my favorite kind moments from Ines... and it is VERY understated, which highlights how I feel she is not very open about her feelings.

She turns her back to W during the campfire scene. The narration AND the art both make a point of that fact. This is important because it means she is SHOWING that she is NOT prying into her thoughts with her arts. She wants W to not feel like she is being interrogated in that scene.

For Hoederer I think of that one module story where he helps pick up after some people vandalised Ines store and he clearly wants to help her feel better but he won't like, comfort her. He just is there with her and helps out.

They both show their affection in more indirect ways towards people. They do not hug anyone, tell them they love them or such. They do more subtle things to show they care and they both struggle to be emotionally vulnerable. Which is a big part of what makes them interesting and what makes their relationship interesting! But it makes it hard to show in a single drawing, you would need a comic format for that.
