commission of Arlais for @latenightowl ♡
If Sere Cassaro is the life of the party, Sera Cassaro is the person organizing the party, feeding everyone, cleaning up spills, and making sure to leave her bootprint right on the party crashers’ arse. To say she’s capable would be an understatement, yet the work she does is always thankless. I’d like to think she manages a fortress at a key point of Arlais’ defenses, and does so with extreme efficiency. Unlike her brother, however, her work seems to consume her life...and she forgets to relax a little. Fortunately for the siblings, nature seems to have given them a soulmate they were born with.
I’m gonna come clean, I love Howard Charles...so I’m 100% biased here. He’s basically the world’s cutest bulldog in human form, and I just want someone to pick this character up and flirt with all the ladies (and men, if that’s your thing). In any case, what I have here is the marshal of the count’s court perhaps? An amiable guy that people just seem to like, and who likes people in return. The type of guy to charm a criminal right into a confession, and then throw the book at them...to the rack with him! I also have his sister coming up if you like, a twin perhaps who compliments his fun-loving nature with stringent duty. When separated, the two can go to opposite extremes to their detriment, but together they work perfectly.
Distant and mysterious, the Pythoness always seems to know something you don’t know - and never hesitates to let you know that you don’t know what she know. Conversely, maybe her life is more like one long That’s So Raven episode. I’m not terribly familiar with the concept of greyseers, honestly, and I’m possibly being influence by the ‘Italian’ aspect of Arlais, but I just like the idea of there being a popular seer that preforms in an oracle/Sylvia Brown capacity. She may have the sight, but she may also be a bit of a shyster. You decide.
Highly regarded as one of the most skilled warriors/strategists in Arlais, Messere Cavaleri’s numerous feats and victories are the subject of countless ballads. And while bards love to exaggerate, he was every bit the archetype of the knight-errant in his youth, and later became an unconquerable military leader. Presently, however, he is starting to age and is in a new phase of his life as a result; that of a teacher. Redwind has replaced the Eyrie as the training grounds for knights in Arlais, the idea being that the new generation should learn from the best. And though he may not be the same fighter he was in his youth, his pages and squires have quickly learned not to underestimate the prowess he still commands.

Counts of Arlais, Viscounts of Crespina, Barons of Crespina, Lords of the Eyrie
House Ascani of Crespina is the ruling house of Arlais, descended from the line of Arla, the Stone Queen, who united the Stone, Field, and Salt tribes of Arlais, and Marcello Ascani, who led the Galvani invaders during the Conquest of Anea.
ARLESIAN CULTURE
INSPIRED BY
Switzerland and Northern Italy
NATIVE PEOPLE
The Arlesians are a dark skinned people with dark, wiry hair. Arlesian face claims must be of African descent.
LANGUAGE
Arlesian, based on Italian. The common tongue is spoken with an Italian accent.
ORIGINS
The Arlesians trace their ancestry back to Galvana, a small island chain said to be south of Varathon, the warm climate of which led to their dark skin. The Galvani, as they were once called, took Arlais during the invasion, settling it despite the climate. Years of interbreeding with the mountain tribes has led to the modern Arlesian people, and their language, a bastardized combination of High Drakonic and the dead language of the mountain tribes.
CULTURE AND LIFESTYLE
Arlesians are seen by most as a strange and whimsical people who live in an environment that doesn't suit their breeding. They place a high value on personal freedom, and as such Arlais has become one of them most lenient regions in Anea with regards to what is expected of members of a household. They are not known for being particularly court savvy, but their ability to adapt, and their willingness to eschew tradition in favor of their own pursuits, is practically legendary. Arlais has an incredibly varied industrial makeup. Mining, falconry, and the training of homing birds, particularly ravens, form the majority of the non-maritime industries in Arlais. Skilled laborers are common within cities, particularly smiths and falconers due to the abundance of ore and birds or prey in the Arlesian Mountains. Whaling, crabbing, and shrimping are common in the coastal regions of Arlais, and there are hundreds of large farms in Flood Plains and the Valley of Arlais.
FASHION
Tight clothing is the norm in Arlais, where strong winds put those in billowy clothing at a severe disadvantage. Dresses are uncommon for women outside of court and formal occasions. Necklines are often high during Winter, but relax slightly in the Summer months. Dark colors are favored, however, gold and silver are also worked into the attire via embroidered designs on sleeves or hem lines. During Summer months medium tones, particularly browns, reds, and greens, are preferred. Long sleeves are worn year round.
