Noblemen on horseback by Jost Amman, 1539-1591
pick one
the perfect blade
the perfect armor
"perfect" meaning the "ideal" or "platonic" version of the thing you pick
Two of my favourite lesser known armour styles
1: Kastenbrust
A style of armour in early Renaissance Germany that directly predates the heavily fluted Gothic style we all know and love, named for its unique breastplate design. Wasn't super popular and was only in circulation for about 50 or so years, but bits and pieces of its style would show up in later armour styles, like the extended faulds in that first picture (also called a Tonlet) would appear every now and again on armour in later centuries
2: Dendra Panoply
A unique armor style from Mycenean Greece. I've heard it described as charioteer's armour but as far as I can tell that claim is disputed somewhat. I remember a few years ago I looked up the timelines and this armour was still in use during the time the Iliad and Oddesy were set in, so like, just imagine the Trojan Horse but full of these guys, would be kinda funny I think
See. Okay. Here's the thing.
I think it's important to note that in the ages where plate armor was most prevalent, a narrow waist was considered very fashionable for women and men (to the point where a lot of arming doublets had little psuedo-corsets built in!). This was considered a martial silhouette, and made it easier to wear armor as the weight of it could be worn on your waist as well as your hips!
So like. Good armor design should have a narrower waist (unisex!) since it helps distribute the weight of the armor, but also like, @character designers you gotta also remember there's still a person wearing clothes in there, yeah?
Once again thinking about the Desiderius Helmschmid dog armor commissioned by Carlos I.
It's so hard to find a good photo of the etchings but it's a boar hunt which is just so fun. This little guy's favorite activity maybe...Or the one they were best at most likely.
If I saw someone wearing this armor irl nobody would be able to stop me
I wanna draw kastenbrust again
