Cain pulled her in a little closer, "I know it doesn't fix anything, but you still have Elaine... you could reach out to her."
"No!" Diana tensed, "I--... I won't put these troubles on her. She knows nothing of Abraham's little experiments. With me, the... the treatments worked well enough to allow me to have her. I won't ruin her life with my reappearance."
"She's your daughter... she loves you." Cain tried.
"...I know." Diana buried her face in his collar, "That's why I won't burden her with my existence. She has been through so much already, don't you think? I show up, and suddenly one of her parents has returned from the dead? That would be too much, even for her."
He rubbed the back of her decaying hand softly with his thumb. He couldn't deny that seeing Diana the way she was might be a shock to Elaine. And his lovely wife wasn't wrong. The girl had already had to deal with her father being murdered, and her inheritance ripped out from under her.
"Okay. I won't force you, you know that." he said, "I understand your concerns for her..."
Cain kissed DIana's forehead softly. He did understand her concerns, but he also thought that Diana's unstable condition might be better off if she had more of a support system. Staying far away from everyone she held dear, none of them knowing she was even alive... It couldn't be helpful.
And while he loved her well and truly, it didn't slip by him that some of her was missing. Not just physically, but mentally, emotionally. Her emotions were erratic, and thinking about his death seemed to put them into overdrive, her mood careening from one extreme to the next.
His death was inevitable, hers was not. She needed someone to care for her when the reaper returned for him.
Cain looked at her, then looked away. What could he possibly say to that? He hadn't brought her back to life, but he'd considered it a blessing. A miracle; a chance to be with the woman he'd loved since he was a young man. Diana though, had been dragged back into the land of the living with no choice in the matter. She still had no idea as to how or even as to who or why she'd been brought back.
When she'd seen Cain on her doorstep, she'd hoped that he was the one who brought her back, that he had answers as well as love for her. Unfortunately, he'd only been given the information that she was alive by an anonymous source through email. Useless in tracking down who had sent it, or if they knew any more than Cain or Diana herself.
Diana sat up, looking at him forlornly, "I can't lose you again... I-- you keep me sane."
"I cannot win the fight against time, my love." He said quietly.
The Storage Shack, Arkhelios…
"Cain, you can't convince me," Diana said quietly, "You're dying, I can see it...."
"Diana, Love..." Cain looked at his wife sadly, "Everyone dies eventually..."
Diana frowned, "....not me."
Diana awoke on the lawn hours later. Or maybe it was days, even weeks. The natural state of things made it unclear how long she’d been lying on the ground there.
Insects bit at her skin, crawling over her fingertips and getting tangled in her hair. She didn’t notice.
She sat up, the memories flashing back in her mind, making her want to lie back down and stay there forever.
She was alone again. Her animal companions sat nearby, looking at her with what one might assume was concern if they were human.
But she was alone. She’d lived in this house alone for so long, and it was almost unbearable then.
Now, she would only think of Cain.
It would be impossible.
She lay back down on the ground, curling in on herself once more.
"You could try!" She clenched her fists into tight balls, tears threatening to fall from her eyes, "I could get more elixir, or you could search Abraham's labs..."
"Come here, come here..." He pulled her towards him and interlaced their fingers, "My brother liked to play god, yes… But he never found a cure for aging, a cure for time itself.."
She looked at their hands quietly, "You don't know... he could have. in that stupid secret lab of his..."
"Secret lab?" Cain raised an eyebrow.
"The one behind the bookcase." Diana grimaced, "the one where he tried--he was trying to help…. To fix me… because of...of…"
She sighed quietly, a sad look on her face, "...I don't even remember what his name was going to be..."
The cycle repeated indefinitely. Most times, she was barely aware of her surroundings.
At some point, in a brief moment of clarity, she stood from the ground, looking around the empty home. The animals who had been strays before they met her looked like strays once more, but they waited for her nonetheless.
She looked back at the house once more, a sad look still adorning her features.
And with that final look, she turned.
This wasn’t home anymore.
The only thing that had made it home was gone.
Things would be easier if she could just forget.
Forget home.
Forget Cain.
Forget Diana.
She had no reason to stay.
