awhile ago ( two years ago on may 11th 2018 ) someone ( saga ) asked me this question. i didn’t know at the time. i let the question linger, because it somehow felt too important. it feels right now. now that we’re nearing the end, you know? now that emily is probably nearing the end of her stay with the BAU as well. it feels right for me to write this, to post this. it feels right for emily. i don’t know. maybe that’s weird. but it feels like goodbye, and if my thoughts are correct, that’s what she’ll do. nd while i imagine the speech she’ll end up giving next wednesday will be to the team and not to a superior, i wanted to reflect the ‘talking to strauss/superior’ model.
“I have watched Doctor Spencer Reid grow from a twenty-something to the man he is now. He’s facing more changes in his life right now than he knows what to do with in that brilliant brain of his, and he’s doing it well. He comes into work every day and gives his best to the people who need him, and to us, despite what this job has taken from him. He’s more than his brain, and I think he’s finally starting to understand that.
Agent Matt Simmons came onto this team during an immense loss for all of us. I know something of what that’s like. But a lot like me, he doesn’t have to worry. He fits with these people, and he brings them a wealth of knowledge and perspective and heart. Matt is someone to trust, and I don’t doubt he’s a contender for running his own unit one day.
Agent Luke Alvez is a powerhouse of a profiler and an agent. He’s fiercely protective of the people in this team, because he’s lost too many people already. He’s a lot like me: always doing something. He doesn’t like the sitting around and the paperwork. He had no trouble profiling me back after I stuck my foot in my mouth the first day I met him. He’s getting somewhere towards happy, and it’s good to see.
Agent Jennifer Jareau has filled a lot of roles in her time with the FBI, and with the BAU in particular, and she’s done them all better than anyone could have asked of her. A few years ago, the role of unit chief was pushed onto her. She showed what she was able to do with it. She is my official recommendation for unit chief of the behavioral analysis unit. Much like Reid, this job has taken from her, and she continues to give herself to it and to us.
Agent Penelope Garcia sees and does more than any of us really know. There are people out there who have tried to squash that spark she has, but she’s what makes this unit what it is. Without her, we never would have solved a single case, nor would we smile as easily as we have. She’s brought us all back from places we thought were too dark to find our way out of, myself included.
Doctor Tara Lewis is on my shortlist of people to run this unit one day. She does far more than anyone gives her credit for. Her experiences as a forensic psychologist lend extremely well to what we do day to day, and she shows it every time she’s given an assignment. If there’s someone out there I want hunting down people who hurt others, it’s her. Life has not been kind to her, but she uses it to help the people that we meet on this job.
Agent David Rossi is the hands of this team, but he’s getting tired, and I don’t blame him. He’s kept trying for so much longer than most have, and I know he’s done it for all of them. He treats the team like his own children and his colleagues, and he’s made more people feel safe than I know how to say. He leaves a lasting impact on everyone he loves.”
