Faisal and Arnie from the first RPG at their wedding.
Even more Faisal/Arnie
Some quick Arnie/Faisal sketches I made for my boyfriend.
Arnie is about 25 here and Faisal 30 (yes Arnold is a little older than canon)
Arnie Lawrence, T. E. Lawrence’s youngest brother. Poor guy at the inquest after the accident. I see the resemblance...anyone have any more “young adult Arnie” photos? Would appreciate!!
Going through the 1922/1955 version of The Mint and comparing the changed names with the restored version from 1973 has led me to a conclusion:
Arnold Lawrence hated his brother's NCOs as much as T.E. did.
The names of the 'urks' (the ordinary airmen like T.E.) have been changed enough so you can't tell who's who. The 50 of them were also condensed down to about a dozen for brevity by T.E. in the 20s, and some given nicknames that indicated where they were from or their former occupations. (T.E. himself did that before passing the manuscript on to Garnett.)
But some of the Corporals and Sergeants -- the ones who even got their names changed? Sometimes it was barely one or two letters, if it was changed at all! One was referred to by a nickname that was still recognized in 1955 by men who'd known him in the 20s. Arnold didn't change that one, that guy was a Grade A dick and deserved to be called out.
Makes me think big brother Ned told him a few stories from the Depot that never made it into the book and Arnold said "fuck it" and didn't change those names, using the idea of 'just try to sue, see what happens'.
I am aware that Arnold actually did change many of the names for the 1955 edition to keep from being hit with libel claims, but in the years after, so many men that were at the Depot verified almost every incident in The Mint that it would have been impossible for anyone to make a libel claim stick.
Arnold had Zed Fs to give for some of those NCOs, and it shows.
Was watching a posting on YouTube of a BBC documentary of T.E. Lawrence and ...just...bless Arnold Lawrence and his brotherly devotion...that English silence and stiff upper lip speaks so loudly...he gives away just what was asked and no more **and fuck anyone who needed more(I think he would say)...**
Arnold Lawrence trying his hardest to put Ned's behavior into...some sort of context, to give reasons for it, to essentially protect and shield his bro gives me life...

Michiel Hegener has finally published the English version of his wonderfully insightful article on A.W. Lawrence, the brother of T.E.
