I know ur a fan of underappreciated characters so Im just gonna say that I'm frustrated w how the fandom as a whole treats Seth esp when compared to how the fandom treats other characters. He's always left out of fox edits when he was an original fox
this is one of those situations where I understand both points of view: - seth was shown in just a handful of scenes. in those scene he was an A+ asshole, throwing slurs and spite left and right. - he left before he had a chance at character development, so all his potential was kept out of the narration and forever cut short. if you don’t look for his background on your own then you’re left with canon material, which built him just enough to justify his presence in the team, and for the rest he was flat. readers can’t be forced to go out of the canon to understand a character. - writing about him or headcanoning about him would mean creating his development from scratch, and that’s added work that no one will pay the creators for. on the other hand: - we have edits about riko. we have fanfictions about riko. cutting out seth feels like making him worse than the actual antagonist of the story - seth was a fox through and through. he had battles to fight, and he was losing them, but he was still trying (for those who read the extra content, remember how he and allison got together? he’s not just a homophobic asshole). tumblr is full of positive messages like “as long as you’re trying you haven’t failed” but is quick to dismiss anyone that doesn’t match the standard of Unproblematicness Du Jour, which can be bent conveniently if we’re talking about a favourite character. - the foxes are literally murderers, drug addicts, abuse survivors. seth was one of them. seth wasn’t given the time he needed to survive his battles and grow, but he was still there. no one deserves to be forgotten into oblivion. on the other hand #2: - he didn’t contribute to the plot beside giving neil a very brief guilt complex, and the edits are understandably about characters that the fandom has had the chance to know for more than a handful of insults, or that send a positive vibe (see the amount of stuff on jeremy and jean, who had less screen time than seth). - the edits are about the foxes who made it at the end of tkm- fanon content reflects, of course, the tastes of the creator. the creator is completely free to cut out characters they don’t like (just like aaron is generally mistreated and when things are good just ignored and left in peace) personal opinion: - yes, I very often empathise with the underappreciated character, even when I perfectly understand why they are, and seth is not an exception. I’d like to see him more, not in the sense of creating his whole arc in headcanons because that would be quite the amount of work, but just seeing him acknowledged. tl;dr I know, seth being ignored is something very real going on in the fandom, but I understand why that happens even though I would like it more if this wasn’t the case. the options to counteract this trend are readily available, though, so unless this message was simply to share a feeling (in which case, yes, I know and understand), I’d say: take matters into your own hands and I’ll promise that you will have at least one person - me - watching your back. second opinion which elaborates on the last point but that might sound paternalistic even though I totally don’t mean it that way, so I’m going to put it under a cut and readers are warned in case they want to go on:
