If I’m remembering right this was in the context of Bruce and Alfred talking about Diana, and ultimately does have a romantic interest in her in certain comic lines - and please don’t get me wrong I absolutely love wonderbat and I ship Bruce in almost any pairing so don’t misunderstand me - but sometimes I like to take this panel out of context and make my own headcanons about it.
One of my headcanons is that Bruce could absolutely be aromantic. I think he’s totally capable of love and feels it very strongly, you can tell that by how many kids he has and the kind of father he is, how he gives back to Gotham and cares about the treatment of villains who have literally tried to kill him as well as the great friend he is to those he cares about.
So Bruce is completely capable of love and a very loving person but I think an argument can be made that he may not feel romantic love and attraction. That just may not be something that’s on his radar and maybe its what’s caused so many problems with different relationships that he’s had. He would certainly care about the person that he’s with, there’s no planet on which he wouldn’t, but at some point there may be a disconnect about what feelings are being exchanged.
Bruce is a great actor so chances are when he was younger he’d figured out he may be “missing” something and pretended to have romantic feelings, but by this time in this panel he’s older and he’s over pretending about it and maybe a little irritated that Alfred’s still kind of pushing for it (though it may be Bruce’s fault because he’s just avoided having that conversation with Alfred).
Any who, long story short, I have a headcanon with an aromantic Bruce who doesn’t want romantic cliches to interfere in his friendships. I think of all people though, Diana would totally get it, she’s wiser than most and understands Love in all it’s complexities better than most. It’s why I love their friendship so much and why I’m also always a fan of wonderbat in any context (ironically).
