Split tongue running across painfully human teeth, Lucifer realized not for the first time that adapting to a human vessel was more trouble than it was worth. He much preferred his true form -- a terror to witness, to be certain, but not at all weak and dull, like this unfortunate wreck of a body. Still, some humans were so horribly tragic that they made Lucifer forget almost entirely about his own dilemma and focus on theirs. Not in the conventional "angelic" way, of course, but his scrutiny brought about enough relief from self-loathing to get him thinking straight again. The boy before him was a dramatic mess of loss and destruction. Such potential, and Lucifer couldn't wait to tap into that well. "And what's a young thing like you walking around on a cold, dark night like this?" he asked, after having spent plenty of time staring at the boy like a predator. "Aren't you worried for your safety?"

-- Thing about working was that you had to be nice to people. And while nice was a game Max could play, it wasn't one he enjoyed very much. It only made it worse that he had to work for his uncle, who liked to sit on the shitter and read Playboy the entire twelve hours they were open. Not only did that leave the restrooms unavailable to customers but Max had to take to pissing outside, and with the weather getting colder, that's the exact opposite of what he wanted to do. Fortunately, his uncle decided to stay home today. And the little corner store he ran with two gas pumps and a broken "open" sign would somehow manage without him. Because despite what people said about Max, he did give a shit about a few things, like making money so that one day he could move out of the shithole he lived in. The place may be small, but it was at least clean. Max kept it that way. Made sure nothing went past its expiration date, the cigarettes were all properly marked, and stupid kids stayed away from the alcohol. Even though it looked like it didn't make a lot of revenue, they had the best gas prices in town and often saw a lot of business. That's just how it was when you weren't a part of a large chain corporation. There was barely any middleman with the money and Max had a lot of it pass through his hands. It kept him busy, at least. And a busy mind was one that didn't think. When the bell above the door jingled, his eyes darted toward the figure entering the station. He didn't say anything at first. Just examined, not making it clear whether he was impressed or not as to what he was seeing. "Can I help you?" he finally asked.

No. He didn’t tell me. But you didn’t deny it.
I didn't confirm it, either.
