So the topic of designing black characters was brought up in a chat with my friend and after some rambling I decided to do an edit of MMX's Layer.

For context, Layer is the MMX character with the darkest skin tone I can think of, however the chat with my friend made me see she's pretty bad as Black rep, not to mention how she's generally done dirty. So, here's the edit:

Criticism and tips appreciated. I'll go into detail behind the changes under the cut if you'd like to read it.

So, Layer has the darkest skin in the franchise - yet she looks more tan than anything, and also the most sexualised design. Yes, the others girls aren't immune to sexualisation, but for Layer it's the default: Bare midriff, undeeboob, hell she looks like she's in her underwear too. Japan has a history of colourism, though I don't feel confident enough to go into detail here.

As for my edit. First I changed the bare midriff and then removed the underboob, giving her a more functional and safe chest piece. After that I made her skin darker and slightly changed her facial features, so that she wouldn't have a generic eurocentric pretty face. I also decided to have one of her eyes visible because of the slightly dehumanising aspect of having them normally hidden (Though I do think hidden eyes are cool. Just looking at the bigger picture). Lastly, I used an edited brush to give her locs instead of that perfect straight hair, while trying to retain the original shape.

I definitely like the edit more (and also think she looks prettier-) but I'm just a white artist, so I'd be thankful if someone could tell me how I did in terms of making her better rep. Thank you for reading!

Anyone do handpokes whos willing to give me some feedback on this draft for a design i made? this is a tattoo for me

I do intend to keep the linework out and just make it a full colour tattoo, the linework is just for the stencil and colour blocking. any advice/wisdom you have for me is very welcome. Im a beginner to handpoke but i feel confident enough to try this. TIA!
