After 9 months of barely missing a class and attending 7 workshops with teachers from all over the world, I decided to take the plunge and perform a Butoh dance on stage in front of people. I had been asked to dance on stage during a show by my good friends in the band WHITE HILLS. If you don’t know White Hills, they are a super heavy, fuzzed out psychedelic rock band that rules. I asked my fellow Butoh dancer friend Leah Beltran if she would join me and she was game. Leah is a beautiful dancer who is actually a company member dancer with Vangeline Theater Butoh company in NYC where I study, so I was really honored to have her join me. I struggled  a lot with some self doubt before making this decision to perform. Questions would pop into my head like... am I worthy of wearing the white paint and dancing? I’ve only been studying for 9 months. I still feel like a baby sometimes in where I’m at in this art form. I have such respect for Butoh and take it seriously. It’s important to me not to mis represent it. What helped me and gave me the push to perform is my desire to find and know my own voice/style as a Butoh dancer. Like other realms of performance I’ve experienced in my 20+ years of acting & performing is that, at a certain point...you need to get out of the practice space and gig. Just the same as for actors, class is important but there comes a time when you need to get out of scene study class and learn from real life experience! This is so important! So Leah and I came up with a basic theme and plan to build a performance around. I was super nervous before the show and could feel it in the pit of my stomach. I then realized that Butoh is the perfect performance art form to be nervous in. You can perfectly us that nervous energy in your stomach and harvest it and let t turn into something else! Showtime came quicker than I imagined. It too so long to put all the make up on that by the time we were finished we got the 3 minute call to get on stage. AAAA! I was hoping to prepare for at least 15 minutes but no. We were thrown into the fire! And man did we burn!!!It was such a great experience, not at all like class. In class you have 2 hours to lose yourself. In the show, time blasted by. I had to be somewhat aware of real world elements like the timing in the song and are we where we should be while still needing to access a deep place inside myself. In the end, I found the experience to be beyond epic. It went so good!  I know this because timing wise, we hit all of of our marks with what we intended in our choreography. The heaviness of the band added SUCH energy to my body. It was incredible! I felt so lucky to have Leah up there with me. She’s such a deep dancer and so present and powerful. All the sudden it was over and I was sweaty and there were people everywhere!! I experienced an almost performance black out at times not even knowing where I was. It was really powerful. Now believe it or not... I have 2 more Butoh dance performances this week!! This is my Butoh Bootcamp Exploration week! Next stop at a gallery in Bushwick this Saturday night. This time with 3 other dancers. Crazy times! XO!
