Nut Art:

The term 'Nut Art' was coined by Roy DeForest. It was a whimsical and humorous movement in the sixties and seventies that was centred in Northern California. It was process focused rather than product focused. With the focus of the process being on the artists self-defining through their art. Artists include: Roy DeForest, Clayton Bailey, Linda Renner, Harold Schlotzhauer, Maija Zack, David Zack, and Richard Shaw.

Iridescence:

Iridescent paints or surfaces appear to change or shift colour when the viewer's angle is changed or the lightsource's angle is changed. It is often the product of Structural colouration. That is when microstructured surfaces, oftentimes multiple layers of them, interfere with visible light. When thin transparent or semi-transparent layers change the way light is refracted iridescence can occur; this can usually be found in plants and animals. This is called thin-film interference.

Acid Free Paper:

Acid free paper is paper that has a neutral or basic pH. This kind of paper is protected by an alkaline reserve, like calcium carbonate. The alkaline reserve neutralises acid that has occurred naturally, either by being originally present or through aging, or has been absorbed from the atmosphere. It is also lignin free. Lignin occurs naturally in paper with wood-based pulp. If it is not removed it deteriorates and discolours the paper over time, especially when the paper is exposed to heat and sunlight.

Ébauche:

In oil painting an ébauche is the first underpainting. Ébauche is from the French word for sketch, blank, or outline. Artists usually go about making an ébauche by blocking in the largest shapes of the composition.

Quadratura:

Quadratura is a type of trompe-l'oeil painting that specialises in architecture as its illusion. Flat ceilings become high vaulted ones and pillars and openings for the 'sky' are added. This type of painting was common in ancient Rome. Then in the early Renaissance the artist Andrea Mantegna brought back the popularity of the art-form. This eventually lead to painters hiring quadraturisti to collaborate with and assist them. The term itself is from the Baroque period.
