This is the last time I’ll see him black and white 😁✨
The oil color’s next! And the process is happening more quickly because this is for a grade and everything. I wish more of my art ideas had a time limit so I could actually work on them 😅
So. Who was gonna tell me that this underpainting shit actually works huh??
The looking lookeerrrrrr
+some process shots
the underpainting & the painting!
been rly into underpaintings and experimenting with colors these days so thought I’d share why!! they’re the foundation of the painting, instead of starting with white (which is a highlight!), you start with a nice neutral foundation. I was using burnt sienna for awhile but have recently been using more pink. once I have that nice base, I go in with a purple to sketch out my composition and major shadows. then I add color from there! I like how it gives me a roadmap AND helps a painting feel more complete even when it’s not done because there’s always color, even if you haven’t filled it all in yet
Purple underpainting (imprimatura) of a birch tree with the first layer of paint applied~
I don't know what I'm doing here. Some color theory, but I mostly painted this without thinking about it. Purple (violet) is a complement to yellow. I added a small amount of purple paint to the white snow (so it's not pure white). Ultramarine Violet was used for the purple. A small amount of Cadmium Yellow added to lots of Titanium White was used to paint the pale yellow background.
This is based on one of the birch trees near my home. This painting isn't finished, but I kinda like it as it is right now. With art it's really hard to know when to stop and when to keep pushing to see if the painting can be improved or developed better. Sometimes you risk making a decent painting worse, you know?
This is oil paint on canvas (stretched over a wooden frame).
You know I kept wondering why Milo made me so uncomfortable as a character, and why I was so much more critical of him compared to the other characters like Gage. This increased when I saw others in the comments of the comic being less critical than I was. Now I’ve realized it’s probably because I see a lot of myself in him. I feel really infantalized by those around me and also still have to live with my parents, and while of course Milo and me aren’t exactly alike- I feel a weird uncomfortable kinship with him. I think Milo and Gage are my favorites. I’m also currently starting a painting of Gage as well. (I know his hair is longer than it supposed to be, but I actually kinda like the look on him) Well, let’s hope I can sleep tonight lest I be consumed by my shame and anxiety.
Breton is sketched, primed and ready for some oil paint. Perhaps subconsciously I’ve made her look a bit like Camellia from Pathfinder: Wrath Of The Righteous… I am replaying that at the moment :D
Had a think about her ear (the Breton, not Camellia) and decided a slight point was probably the way forward. By the time of Skyrim I guess most of the Direnni blood is diluted in most Bretons. But without a slight point, they’re just short Imperials, right? :)
Hope your all well!
(The burnt umber layer kinda’ makes it hard to see, but here’s a picture nonetheless)
