Color Theory Studio Project

“Pieces of Home”

I made this to be in communication with a Sheila Hicks. For me, I wanted this to look like a sunset I might see in Hawaii. We have gorgeous sunsets in Kona and I wanted to try to re-create that. Our sunsets are not like the ones that we have here because everything that is happening in the sky usually is reflected on the water. The water is usually a deep blue, but will have traces of the pinks, purples, reds, and golds that are in the sunset. Sheila Hicks usually does pretty abstract work with her pieces, so I wanted to try to create some thing that was a little less abstract. The pom-poms are nod to the way she creates and a nod to the Koosh balls are used to play with the child. Feeling these pom-poms took me back to my childhood of growing up in Hawaii. It brought back a lot of great memories!

Color Research - Motivational signs

I hung the sign on the balcony of the third floor in the apartments! I was going to try to put it in the elevator, but had a fear it would get taken down. I think that this is a good place because it is right by the stairs in the elevator, so it is a relatively high traffic area that will have a lot of people seeing it! I hope it gets to encourage a few people! Let’s pray it stays up with this wind and rain!

Color Research - Avocado skins dye

I want to dye more things with avocado skins! I think this was a really fun activity and the color is absolutely gorgeous! Again, I want to try to do this with different fabrics and materials to see what I can do. I think I might try to use yarn and dye it in segments since so it is darker in certain areas and then try to crochet with it!

Color Research - Hapazome

HAPAZOME!!! My new favorite thing!!! I am living on 3 acres this summer and am going to try this all the time! I want to see what other colors I can find and if I can find a way to paint or dye with these. I want to try doing this onto fabric or other materials!

Color Research - Painting with a magazine strip

I LOVED this!!! I painted a scene of my home with our beautiful sun rises and mountains! I am very proud of this piece and think I may find a nice way to frame or display it! Thank you Joe for the fun practice!

Questions of the Week

Ten of Hearts: The idea of abstraction is something that honestly is a little confusing for me. From my understanding, it relates to abstract art. I think the abstract art is incredibly important because the meaning can be different things to different people. Sometimes, when there is a specific piece of work that has a lot of details and clear meaning, it can be hard to find personal meeting within the piece. Once a piece is given its meaning, there is a little freedom in that decision. When a piece is abstract, the possibilities for the meaning behind the piece are endless. A piece convene many different things to a single individual, yet alone a whole group of people. Something that’s great about abstraction is that it gives the artist the opportunity to create without having to have a specific meaning in mind. The meaning can change as the piece goes along due to its abstractness. As a little kid abstract art was some thing that I really loved but also really confuse me because I had a hard time with having art that was so freeform. It is something that I’m wanting to try to get better at doing in my own personal practice. 

Queen of Diamonds: I think it is critical as an artist to have a physical space to make your art. It’s really hard for me to try to create while living on campus because I don’t have a place that is designated just for my art. Back home, my room is safe haven and I feel that I can create because I am able to start some thing and walk away from me if I need to. It’s hard trying to do that when you live in a dorm room and have a roommate because you don’t have the space in the room to be able to freely be creative. For me, I need lots of space. I need space to start one project, leave it alone for a while, and start another one all in the same room. Helps me to have all of my materials in one place so that I can be inspired by what is around me. My art often reflects what I am feeling and the surroundings that I am in, so for me in the place that I create things as everything. I’m looking forward to being able to have my own space this summer to be able to create and come back to things as the summer goes on. I think in doing this, I will have really intentional art that does not need be rushed due to having restraints on my physical space to create.

Questions of the Week

Ace of Diamonds: The location piece can affect its meaning because of the environment it’s placed in. We’ve talked about it a lot in class that presentation is everything. A piece can look and feel entirely different when it is put in a different light or location. When we are given or not given certain context, the artwork changes because it is up to the viewers’ discretion to discover the meaning. When different elements are added or taken away from a piece, it will change the way viewers look at it and hands can change the meaning of an art work.

Five of Spades: For me, I try to daily be thinking about the things that are surrounding me and how I can use it to impact my art. A lot of my art is based off of what’s going on in my life and isn’t means that I used to express what I’m feeling. I like to look at my situation throughout the day and think of how I could use it to be inspired. I am trying to be more meaningful with the time that I have, this includes trying to be intentional about the time that I give myself to be creative. I want to start giving myself designated time throughout the day to sit and create whatever I need to. I think that with summer coming up, it is going to be a good way for me to instill this practice because I’m going to have a lot more time on my hands. I want to start to create habits that allow me to create so that I can make the pieces that I need to create. In setting these habits over the summer, I hope to continue them throughout the next school year is that I can trying to improve my skills as an artist every day.
