Thoughts on “What’s (Really) Specific about New Media Art?
The Article talks about how New Media Art has become very popular in recent years, ever since technology boomed and we learned how to use a computer for the first time. Artists use it to express their creativity and emotions through this new wave of Art. The author noted that New Media Art was kind of hidden away at first, not as appreciated as it should have been. But in the coming years, New Media Art has been coaxed out of its shell by curators who have put an effort in displaying New Media Art to the world. The Article refers a lot to the texts of CRUMB, “Curatorial Resource for Upstart Media Bliss”, held by Beryl Graham and Sarah Cook from the School of Art, Design, Media and Culture in the UK; who created the first seminar for New Media Curators. The author of this article posed a lot of questions concerning New Media Art being curated, such as “is it being more displayed as New Media or Art?” or “would curators need to learn a different model to curate New Media Art?”. I guess these questions come from the fact that this is a new phase of art, jumping from contemporary art to New Media Art.
I wonder why there is such a fuss over New Media Art in the first place. I think it might be because it is so new that it has to be talked about and the fact that it's not simply using paints or sculpting materials. But then one has to wonder: is it more science than art or more art than science? And what is the purpose of New Media Art? Because Art used to be about portraying a time and a place or predicting the future. What is the message that New Media Art is trying to send us?
Well even with all these questions, there remains one conclusion:
“New Media Art is the art that uses new media technology as a medium-period.”
