Though the Shield to the Chosen King had already passed through these lands, challengers still came. The corpses that litters the ground no longer rose to fight, and new ones added to the pile were not enslaved to Gilgamesh’s bidding. Despite this, he did not leave.
It was not that he was unable to go. The forces once holding him to this spot had weakened considerably with his 2-millennia task complete. He still could not pass to the beyond, but he felt no desire to, not yet. So long as his love’s soul was trapped, so to would his own be. When the chosen King finally pressed back the darkness he and Somnus would be allowed peace.
The thought brought a twinge of sadness to the man. It had been so long since he had last seen his King, and his heart ached just as strongly as it had the day death had wrenched them apart.
Gilgamesh sat cross-legged upon the bridge where he’d fought his descendant, as still as the other corpses around him, yet the eyes below his mask glowed brightly with unnatural light. He had felt the presence enter his grounds. Another challenger, no doubt. They would fall just as swiftly as the others. He stood as Celene entered, drawing his sword in the arm he still had, and turning to face her.
Celene was astounded by the place. The whole thing was amazing. The geography was different from the rest of Leide that she’d seen, and there were hints of human habitation there that were immeasurably old. Tattered flags, stone cairns. It was absolutely insane. And she’d really heard very little about this sort of place.
She wandered farther, finding swords, bones, armor. It was a treasure for archaeologists. Her eyes were wide as she looked around, distracted as she came to a bridge, until movement caught her eye. She stopped, her eyes wide as she stared at the sight of the man standing. He was huge, tall and broad, and surrounded by bodies. His whole frame was armored, and, as she watched, he drew a sword that was likely as tall as she was. She just stared at him, eyes wide. When he turned to her, she finally moved, stumbling back with her empty hands raised, palms out.
“I-I’m sorry. I didn’t- I didn’t know anyone was here.”
