Norway becomes 55th nation to sign NASA Artemis Accords for peaceful space exploration

Norway's inclusion comes just more than a month since NASA's last signator.

Fifty-five nations have now penned their commitment to NASA's Artemis Accords. NASA announced Norway's decision to join the Artemis Accords for a "safe, peaceful, and prosperous future in space" as the space agency's website phrases it. Norway is the third country to join the Artemis Accords so far in 2025. A signing ceremony to welcome Norway took place today (May 15) at the Norwegian Space Agency in Oslo, with Norway's Minister of Trade and Industry Cecilie Myrseth signing on behalf of the Norwegian government.

Lithuania becomes 40th nation to sign Artemis Accords for moon exploration

The United States' roster of moon partners continues to grow.

There are now 40 nations in the United States' moon-exploration coalition. Lithuania joined the club on Wednesday (May 15), signing NASA's Artemis Accords during a ceremony in Vilnius.  "Welcome to the Artemis Accords family, Lithuania," NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said in a statement.  "Our nations are strong partners — and now we expand this partnership to the cosmos," Nelson added. "In just four years, a remarkable 40 countries have signed the Artemis Accords. Together, as a global coalition, we will explore the stars openly, responsibly and in peace."

Belgium signs Artemis Accords for responsible moon exploration

Belgium is the 34th nation to join the club.

Another nation has joined the United States' moon-exploration framework. Belgium signed the Artemis Accords on Tuesday (Jan. 23), becoming the 34th country to do so. "Congratulations to Belgium on becoming the newest member of the Artemis Accords family," NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said in a statement. "It's clear that countries around the world understand the opportunity that space presents. As the 34th signatory of the Artemis Accords, Belgium is showing great leadership in committing to responsible exploration in the 21st century."

Peru and Slovakia sign the Artemis Accords for peaceful moon exploration

42 countries have now signed on for "peaceful, transparent, and responsible exploration of space for the benefit of all."

This week, two more nations signed the Artemis Accords. NASA held a ceremony at its headquarters in Washington, D.C. on Thursday (May 30) to host representatives from both Slovakia and Peru. During the event, both countries signed the agency's Artemis Accords, a set of principles that aims to lay out a framework for peaceful cooperation in space and on the moon.  The addition of these two nations brings the total of signing countries to 42. The Artemis Accords were first launched and signed in October 2020 by eight nations, including the United States.

Greece signs Artemis Accords for responsible moon exploration

Greece is the 35th country to join the exploration club.

Greece is the latest country to sign up to the United States' club for guiding principles of space exploration. Greece's foreign minister, Giorgos Gerapetritis, signed the Artemis Accords on behalf of his country at the U.S. State Department on Feb. 9, during a wider U.S.-Greece Strategic Dialogue meeting. "Congratulations to Greece on becoming the 35th country to join the Artemis Accords family," NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said at the ceremony, according to a NASA statement.

India and Ecuador sign Artemis Accords for peaceful moon exploration

India signed the agreement during an official state visit to the White House on June 22.

India and Ecuador both signed the Artemis Accords this week, bringing the total number of countries that have agreed to sustainable and peaceful space exploration to 27. The Artemis Accords, which share their name with NASA's Artemis program of moon exploration, are a framework co-authored by NASA and the U.S. Department of State that lays out a set of principles and practices designed to ensure sustainable and peaceful exploration of the moon and beyond. Ecuador became the 26th country to sign the accords on Wednesday (June 21) at the nation's embassy in Washington, D.C., according to a U.S. Department of State statement. And today (June 22), India became the latest nation to sign the Artemis Accords during a state visit that includes the country's prime minister, Narendra Modi. "India has signed the Artemis Accords, which advance a common vision of space exploration for the benefit of all humankind," according to a White House statement.
