Summit Park & Art Feeds: From Micha's Perspective
When I first agreed to do Summit Park, I don't think I knew what I was getting myself into . Our group of four interested individual's, eventually turned into eight. Right off the bat, we realized it was going to be a challenge working around eight different schedules while trying to finish (what seemed like) never ending applications for not only Summit, but our organization Art Feeds. But as we started discussing projects we could do to help promote and benefit Art Feeds, I could tell we were all not only excited to help out this organization, but already passionate about this organization.
Art Feeds is a nonprofit organization, located in Joplin, Missouri, that believes in using expression through visual, performing and creative arts to help children get through traumatic situations and/or overcome obstacles. Meg Bourne was the founder of Art Feeds at age 19 and she is also our community advisor. We are in the process of meeting her face-to-face, but through email she seems lovely and has been very helpful.
While working with Art Feeds, I hope to spread awareness while using my own creative talents and leadership abilities. As much as I would like to say, "The entire Springfield Community will know about Art Feeds by the end of the year!" I know this is unlikely. We want to achieve a reachable goal. Which is why, by the end of the year, we hope to have informed majority of Drury University's community about Art Feeds. Hopefully spreading a contagious want for helping out a wonderful organization.
Our first steps to spreading the word about Art Feeds were setting up a booth at the Student Activities Fair where we reached out to many underclassman about what Art Feeds is all about. We ended up with around 60 email addresses that have already received links to all of our social networking sights. By the way, we have Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/ArtFeedsDrury, Twitter: @ArtFeedsDrury and Tumblr (obviously). The next step, is a benefit concert. Hopefully. There's still a lot of details up in the air so I don't want to say too much, but we're working on a venue and have two bands interested in playing. It will probably be held around the third week of November. So, stay tuned.
Overall, everything is running pretty smoothly. As mentioned before, scheduling around eight different people is probably our biggest struggle right now. We haven't all realized that sacrifices will need to be made and things are going to come up. We're also still learning how to work with each other (Oh and live with each other). Last week in our first Summit Leadership Class we learned our leadership style. Turns out, there are four different leadership styles. Who knew? I'm an "Adventurous Orange." Although I think my result was way off, I understand the lesson that was being taught: We all learn, plan and communicate in different ways. That's what we really need to consider and work on.
Well, I think I've covered a lot, maybe too much for this one blog. I can't wait to see our impact on Drury and the community. Please check out our social sites. We would love a "like" or "follow."
