When we were given the task to not only begin our experimentation with colours but to also start to introduce letter forms into our work I was very nervous. Creating monochromatic pieces in a medium that I was unsure of had become comfortable, the idea of attempting to manipulate colour within oil paint, a medium I am still learning to control felt like a monumental task. Luckily, we were asked to look specifically at complementary colours which eased this stress some. I was vastly uncertain as to how I would introduce letter forms into my work and began this piece following one of the steps from the 'Draw Like A Savage' workshop which had us placing letters specifically in the background of the piece a process for which I simply used a stencil to paint in each K, ensuring that I didn't let the letters intrude into the main form which I had lightly painted onto the piece. It was during this process that I thought about also using letters within the main subject of the piece, once again using a stencil and stopping each shape before it crossed over any line so that I could present the different sections of the piece. I love the final effect of this piece, the various incomplete letters alongside the whole ones not only manages to represent the different sections of the piece but also creates an almost optical illusion effect of confusion to the piece, something I personally love.
