My favourite destructive criticism was someone kindly advising me that my plot was unoriginal, I used too many words ending in "ing", and "literally nothing happens" in 18 chapters. Then they told me I should "wrap it up asap" and demanded all the answers to the mysteries I had set up. When I begged to differ, they told me that if I couldn't handle the smallest bit of constructive criticism I shouldn't be a writer. Heh! Sometimes you gotta lol at the sheer effrontery!
It always kind of makes me shake my head that people are pissy when they dump all over someone and that person isn’t grateful for it.
People I’ve asked? People I have a relationship with? People I talk to? Someone who reviews all the time and usually loves stuff but thought this thing was nuts and didn’t work? I’m completely interested in listening. Desperate to listen. Eager to listen. A total stranger with an essay on why Things in Common is awful in every way (This really happened, btw). Not that interested. I’m generally polite with a “thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts” but that’s it.
