Scarepair Crowboat: Peter Beale & Arthur “Fatboy” Chubb & Tamwar Masood & Darren Miller (EastEnders) + “Scaring the Scaredy Cat”

It was a terrible idea. It was worse than terrible -- it was stupid. Idiotic. Dangerous. The only reason Tamwar hadn't voiced his doubts yet was for fear of disturbing who knew what. Anything could be lurking in the shadows of the abandoned building. Fatboy had been ecstatic at seeing the gaping hole in the fence outside, but, frankly, it set Tamwar on edge.
They finally found a way into the building. Through a broken winow. Another bright red flag popped up and Tamwar finally hesitated.
'I really don't think this is a good idea,' he said, keeping his voice down. 'Why can't we just have the party in a house, like normal people?'
Darren stared at him like he was crazy. 'Because it's Halloween?'
He said it like it was the most obvious thing in the world, but Tamwar was still stumped. How was Halloween a good reason to risk their lives? It was supposed to be fun, as far as he was aware. Not that his mum had ever let him and Syed have any fun on Halloween. She thought it was immature and ridiculous.
He close his mouth and bit back his argument. Fatboy made sure the window was free of broken glass before hopping through it. Darren followed. Peter nudged Tamwar, grinning, and hauled himself up onto the sill.
'I think I'll wait out here,' Tamwar said. He shrugged. 'Someone should keep watch. This is technically -- and literally -- illegal, so...'
Fatboy and Darren both sighed but agreed to let him play security guard. Peter, on the other hand, glanced between them, then put his foot back on the outside of the warehouse.
'I'll stay with you, then,' he said, and he shrugged as well then. 'It's only fair. Two go in, two stay here.' And then, with a wavering grin: 'Just -- be quick, yeah?'
'Come on, Fats,' Darren muttered with a shake of his head.
They lit up their torches but the light quickly disappeared when they moved away from the window. Tamwar glanced at Peter, who leaned back against the wall with a small smile. He couldn't tell if it was disappointment, relief, or anxiety.
'You could've gone with them if you wanted to,' Tamwar said, trying to figure it out. 'I didn't mind waiting out here on my own.'
But Peter said, 'I wasn't really that keen either, to be honest. I'd rather wait out here.'
'Oh, so, you get to look like the good guy who chose to keep the coward company as opposed to being one yourself. Great.'
Peter bent his head over his phone, typing away, presumably to his sister or his dad, lying about where he was. Tamwar didn't even want to think about what his mum would say if she knew where he was.
An eternity passed, and he was on the verge of asking Peter to text Fatboy or Darren to tell them to hurry up when a loud, nearby clang of something metal stopped him. Both heads whipped around, trying to locate the source. Hoping they wouldn't. And then Tamwar saw it.
A light, about thirty feet away. Coming right towards them.
'What do we do?' Tamwar hissed, panicking. He hadn't thought about what being the lookout actually meant.
Peter grabbed his arm and pulled him toward the window.
'What are you doing?!'
'Hiding! Come on!'
There really wasn't another choice. As much as he didn't want to go in there, he really didn't want to stay out here. Groaning unhappily, he climbed through the window, with Peter right behind him. They stumbled through the dark, trying to get out of sight. Everything echoed, and every noise went straight down Tamwar's spine.
They blindly found their way out of the room and into a hallway. Left, right, up, or back the way they came. Left and right were both a long walk further into the darkness. Back wasn't safe. Up didn't look promising.
'Which way?'
BANG.
They both jumped out of their skin.
'What was that?!' Peter hissed.
'How would I know?!' Tamwar countered. A loud creak answered from up above. 'Right, we need to go before this place collapses.'
'Wait, we need to find Fatboy and Darren.'
Tamwar groaned quietly but he knew he was right. They debated for a moment between going left or right.
'Maybe we should split up,' Peter suggested. 'We could get round the whole building and meet back here?'
Tamwar whipped around to stare at him incredulously. 'Are you serious? "Let's split up" is just about every person's famous last words before they get gruesomely murdered by a guy weilding a chainsaw or a samurai sword.'
Peter threw a hand up. 'Well, we need to--'
'Pete! Tam!'
Fatboy's voice bounced from every corner. A shake akin to thunder came from up above, and then he came hurtling down the stairs.
'Fats! What happened?!' Peter asked, catching him when he nearly came crashing into them, doubling over.
'There was -- it was--'
He shook his head, trying to catch his breath inbetween words. Tamwar glanced at the stairs, half-expecting an axe-wielding maniac to be right on his tail.
Finally, Fatboy managed to say, 'There was something up there, man. I don't know what it was, but it was just -- standing there in the corner, staring at us, and then--'
'And then what?' Tamwar said warily.
'It just came at us and we ran for it.'
'Wait, where's Darren?' Peter asked.
Fatboy's head snapped up. 'What?' He looked around frantically, finally straightening up. 'Nah, nah, he was right behind me, I swear! Oh, no, what if it got him?!'
'Or something's fallen on him and he could be hurt,' Tamwar said.
He saw the panic-stricken expressions on their faces.
'Right, come on.'
He heard them behind him as they climbed the charred and crumbling staircase. Trying not to think about it collapsing from beneath him and being buried under rubble or impaled on splintering wood. What if he was about to find Darren in that exact state?
His eyes automatically scanned the floor as they moved carefully through the hallway, and he half-expected to accidentally kick something vaguely human-shaped.
'We were in there,' Fatboy said quietly, pointing to a room on the left.
Tamwar took a breath then peered into the room. It was big, and the corners were entirely enveloped in shadows. He squinted and cautiously stepped inside.
'Are you sure you were in here?'
Silence. Except for his racing heart, that was. He turned around and found the hallway empty. He was an idiot.
'Okay,' he said loudly. 'Ha-ha. Very funny, guys, you got me.'
He stepped back into the hallway, searching for their hiding spot while cursing himself internally. He peered around the corner. A few feet away, a figure darted into a room. It looked taller than any of them.
He took a step forward -- then something was running at him. Instinct pulled him backwards, he tripped, spun around and a piercing shriek filled every inch of the building as a door swung open in front of him. Something grabbed him from behind and, yeah, he might have jumped and maybe yelled a little.
Fatboy buckled with laughter immediately as Peter removed the clown mask he had somehow managed to procure from somewhere.
'You messed it up!' he said, obviously disappointed.
'We still got you, didn't we?' Darren said in his ear, shaking him with the arm he had wrapped around him. 'Eh, Tam? You gotta admit, you were freaked out.'
'Yeah, you got me,' Tamwar said, rolling his eyes. His heart was still beating, even if it would send a hospital moniter into distress. 'Can we go now?'
Fatboy had just barely stopped laughing. He waved a hand, standing up straight as he said, 'No! No way, we still need to check this place out properly.'
'What, you were serious? You actually want to throw a party? Here?'
Tamwar threw a pointed look around them. A well-timed gust of wind blew threw the house, rattling the loose floorboards and windows.
'Right, I really don't want to be buried here, so, can we please leave?'
'Tam, man, don't be so boring! It's--'
A distant bang cut him off. The silence was filled by a loud thudding not nearly far enough away. Something groaned, then the thudding turned to what was unmistakably hurried footsteps.
'That's definitely not you this time, right?' Tamwar muttered.
'Definitely not,' Darren agreed.
Tamwar raised his eyebrows at Fatboy, who was now frozen to the spot, staring down the dark corridor. Another bang nearly sent him through the roof.
'Nah, this place is creepy as hell, we're leaving.'
