@afoxnamedmulder @judasisgayriot OK so the thing about a petrellicest band AU is that Nathan is patently uncool. Like he WOULD NOT be in a band. And also his parents are controlling assholes who want him to go into law/politics/the military but certainly not a BAND, of all things.

There's also a 12 year age gap between Nathan and Peter. So here's how it works:

Peter starts a punk band when he's in high school, mostly to rebel/annoy his parents/stick it to the man. He plays guitar and he kinda sucks at it, but that's not gonna stop him. He gets some of his friends involved and then he BEGS Nathan to join, not even particularly because he thinks Nathan should be in his band or that it'll be a good fit in any way whatsoever (it won't lmao) but because he wants to spend more time around Nathan. Nathan eventually acquiesces and agrees to play keys for a few songs (I'm imagining that Nathan has been learning to play piano since he was practically in diapers because the Petrellis are rich af and rich parents always have their kids learn piano. Peter probably started learning it too but he didn't have the patience and his parents didn't care so he fell off. But Nathan was committed because he always felt like he had to be the best at everything his parents wanted him to do, and then he continued with it long into his teen years because it was nice to have something that was just his. So he's actually really good at piano, way better than any of the rest of the band are at their instruments.)

So Nathan joins and they tone their stuff down a little bit since thrashy punk/hardcore isn't exactly a genre conducive to keyboard/piano. And then Nathan and Peter start writing songs together and it shouldn't work - like everything else about them, their music tastes, their experience, their political views/goals for this music, their reasons for doing this or playing music in the first place - are so vastly different and opposing, and yet somehow it does, somehow they have something - something really special.

They both feel it; Peter puts more and more of his time into the band and less and less into school and his grades, Nathan starts to miss important appointments/rearrange his life around the band, because writing and playing music together is just another way they get to be together, a safe way for them to be together, and it's so beautiful. When they're both playing together it's like there's nobody else in the world (sorry other bandmates ig). Nathan probably uses some of his/the family's connections to get gigs/get some press buzz and suddenly they're taking off, they're a thing, they're flying high and it's like nobody can stop them. Definitely also a lot of questionably physically intimate stage gay behaviour between Peter and Nathan happening. It's the most beautiful time in their lives and they think maybe they can keep it going forever but they can't. Their parents put a stop to it, they persuade Nathan that he's throwing his life/career away for a silly little side project that nobody will care about in five years time, Arthur finds Nathan a wife, partially to stop the rumours flying around about him and Peter, and Nathan acquiesces and quits the band, even though he knows it'll break Peter's heart. He tries to persuade Peter to stop it too and focus on school since he needs to graduate/go to a good college, but Peter is stubborn and keeps it going for a little while. But without Nathan there his heart isn't really in it and the band isn't the same and they haemorrhage fans and he eventually quits it, gets okay/decent grades in school, graduates, and uses the money from their brief stint of fame to go to nursing school because his family won't support him in that and he doesn't want his father's money anyway.

And that's the end of the Petrellicest band - they burned bright but burned out fast, kind of like the finale of season 1. But sometimes Nathan will find himself writing bits of songs, and Peter will doodle lyrics in the margins of his lecture notes, and it's just another if only, another what if, in the tragedy that is the Petrelli brothers.

Hi, it's me again! Rereading the question you're right, it was very unclear, sorry (I swear it made sense in my mind). I was referring to Arthur knowing about empathic mimicry during the Pinehearst Arc. Peter is literally a walking-piñata of abilities; 'stealing' this ability, Arthur could achieve his goals far easier. So, it was a choice not using it, or he didn't know about it, or empathic mimicry is a power to "unlock", like intuitive aptitude? Or even, Arthur had to collect powers from zero?

Ah, so did Arthur know how Peter's empathic mimicry worked when he stole it from Peter? I've never thought of this before, but @heroes-trash just brought up some interesting insights into this (so it's my turn to summon you hehe) - if Arthur DID know then why did he waste his time running around and killing people for their powers?

I like to imagine that Arthur just wasn't empathetic enough to access Peter's harmless way of acquiring abilities. We know Peter has to focus on how the people make him feel, if even Peter Petrelli - the most empathetic person EVER - had to train and struggle to access his repertoire of powers, then it makes sense that Arthur, who clearly has no empathy, couldn't get them that way.

Even Sylar, we discover, can absorb abilities empathetically, but since he's shut down that part of himself he struggles to do so too.

TLDR: Peter is a beautifully empathetic angel who wouldn't hurt anyone for a power, and gathers them through love. Arthur, on the other hand, is a major a-hole who probably couldn't empathise with anyone if his life depended on it. Therefore, I like to think that the ability was just like "no, f**k you" and didn't work properly for Arthur hehe

(Also, I don't think Arthur or Angela knew about Peter's ability when he was growing up, as Angela even says in the S1 flashback with Charles "that poor boy can't get out of his own way". If she knew he had an ability before the events of season 1, surely they'd have acted on trying to manipulate it sooner - this is the Petrellis, after all!)
